It seems like forever since I've done one of these. Come to think of it, it's BEEN forever.
I could feel that's it's been a bit too long since we saw the Atlantis kids last since it took me a little while to get into the SGA groove when I watched this episode. But I did get into it, finally, much thanks to this being an episode completely focused on the Sheppard-McKay dynamic. And those episode can never be bad, even if there are a few annoying things.
It started out a little strangely, I thought. Why were Sheppard & Teyla just standing around watching McKay work? They seemed extraordinarily passive for a very long time, considering they're in quite dire consequences. That made the beginning a bit too much about exposition; McKay just explaining what has happened and what is wrong, like T&S are idiots. I thought that a bit odd. But since it seems like years since season 2 ended, I suppose it was necessary...
But then, like I said, this episode was all about John & Rodney staring at each other for no apparent reason, discussing every last thing with only each other, ignoring everyone else. Also, in the beginning, Rodney kind of looked like he suffered from the bubonic plague...
You know I love Joe, but sometimes I wish he was bit more expressive. When I started thinking about it, the way he expresses worry, determination, anger etc, seemed all the same. Like this. He might as well be amused. Or constapited.
David, on the other hand, expresses every emotion like there's no tomorrow. Particularly in relation to Sheppard. I love this big eyed kid-like expression as he stares longingly and lovingly at John.
And I absolutely adore all their private little conversation, in secluded corners of Atlantis. John speaking in a low and while determined, almost tender voice. And Rodney just listens.
This is also the episode where I think Rodney apologises to John no less than three times! Here because John says "Dumb this down any further and you're gonna get hit". Heh. Rodney, dear, haven't you learned that your boy is actually quite smart?
Joe may have his not-expressive-enough moments, but damn is he beautiful.
Yet another private conversation, away from prying eyes and ears! For an emergency, they do take a lot of time to be alone. ♥
But Rodney's greedy and he wants MORE alone time, damnit! Really, look at the hero worship in that look. I wonder if David purposely plays it that way or if it just comes naturally? *g*
And look! John's worried again! Or is he angry? Confused? Drunk?
Scared?
I do love the little lip biting he does here, though. And he really looks genuinely sad. So, it's all good.
Back to the private little world of John & Rodney. The world ceases to exist!
I love John's thinking face. And for once, he's way ahead of Rodney! No more dumbing down from you in the future.
I do believe John's just a little bit gleeful about the fact that Rodney has no better idea to offer. He probably keeps a mentally tally: John 1 Rodney 3 (in the past hour).
This just screams for a dirty minded caption, doesn't it? John: *brags* Rodney: He can't be THAT big! Can he? It'll never fit! In non-fantasy news, there's no END to Rodney's worship of John, it seems. The way he defers to John, listens to him, OBEYS him. It's beautiful. He's in John's clutches, that's for sure.
Top it off with this seemingly random look. It speaks volumes.
But then! The best thing EVER! Seriously. This is as close to canonical slash as you get. John RUSHES - he leaps! - to get to Rodney's puddlejumper after they killed all the asteroids. He can't get there fast enough! And for what? A celebratory fuck? John's all pumped on adrenaline, Rodney did great, they NEED to get release! Hee! Just look at the joy on Rodney's face. And John really doesn't seem to want anything other than to see Rodney. So there's just no two ways about it: these gentlemen are so doing it. Even if it's only when they're high on adrenaline and have won. Which is at the end of every episode. So, say a few times a day?
It's quite unexpected how etherally beautiful Shep looks in his spacesuit. Zelenka looked a little week in the knees there, didn't he?
Here we go again! Rodney's staring at Shep, trying to look all innocent and stuff...
But John's not bying it.
And Rodney's actually looking truly intimidated as John steps closer and closer and closer...
...and closer
In your face! Now that is really, really close. John probably knows he can rattle Rodney by being physically close, since it makes Rodney very jittery, for obvious reasons.
Here's another one of those completely random, private looks they share. They both look away quickly, as if caught, when they'd hoped they could have looked surreptiously.
Dear, dear Rodney simply can't STAND John being angry with him. His basically on his knees begging for forgiveness here. Rodney may occassionally say "I'm sorry", but it's seldom quite as genuine as it is here.
John's trying to be stern, but he can't. I love the obvious relief on Rodney's part. And I love the long look John gives Rodney as he leaves. These two, man...
With all that, I had to love this episode, even for its faults. So yay for SGA and the enduring love of Sheppard & McKay.
