Our local library is great for learning new things! I signed up for a four session / eight hour course on
Madhubani painting, which is a folk art from a region of India. What's neat is not only am I making my very first painting ever , I'm also learning a lot of interesting cultural things. I have like zero experience with paint, heh- I can't even draw, really. But I figured what the heck, it's free and could be fun.
The first class involved drawing a design on the canvas. Fish are symbols of happiness and prosperity. The plants represent a sacred plant called the tulsi plant. Madhubani paintings have a border around them - that was the hardest part for me, measuring the border. Mine is not quite straight as I fail at ruler. I am going to have my hubby help me measure the next one. Everything is outlined in black waterproof marker (I used sharpie). Next class we will be using acrylic paints in very vibrant colors to fill in the designs. I will post more pictures after that, but here's what I have so far...
At this stage I just have the fish outlined and not the plants yet...
The plant stems and the 'collars' and fins of the fish are filled in with tiny lines and will remain black and white.
