New Drink, Because Drinking Is Good!

So, this weekend we had a party. Well, someone else had a party, which we (several folks including marasca, llasram, chrysoberyl, and fizrep) attended. Something like that. In any event, as occasionally (read: always) happens at our parties, there was some (read: lots of) drinking involved. Most of which involved lizature's favorite substance, Hard Liquor.

Now, the joy of hard liquor as compared to, say, beer or wine, is what I would call the Lego factor. That is to say, you can mix it and match it and play with it to make fascinating new creations. Not exactly something you can do successfully with beer or wine. Now, being an occasionally creative sort, I love the freedom of imagination that hard liquor provides me. Hard liquor makes me an artist, and the shot glass is my canvas. But enough metaphor.

We're a few gin and tonics into the evening, and we're studying the contents of the liquor cabinet in question. It's fairly well-stocked, and among the more esoteric items we found was a bottle half-full of Creme de Cacao. Ooooh, chocolatey. But, the question was asked, what can we DO with it? Drinking it straight is kinda nasty- not like Godiva White/Dark/Cappuccino or Chocolate Chip Cookie liquors, which can stand by themselves. There was a lot of fruity drinks going on nearby, and the wise marasca suggested bananas, and fire, to make something akin to bananas flambe with chocolate. Chocolate Banana Flambe. Sounds damn good.

Day two of the weekend sees us purchasing the needed ingredients. Banana Schnapps apparently comes in an insanely potent 99 proof variety. 49.5% alcohol by volume! That's stronger than my own blood! Impressive. And Bacardi 151 is self-explanatory (they later used it for firebreathing; crazy motherfuckers). So, carefully, like primitive alchemists searching for the Philosopher's Stone, we merge the ingredients, looking for that perfect proportion... yes. Half banana, half cacao, and then the layer of 151. Ignite. Cover with hand. Shake vigorously without destroying the snifter (this step took about 2 shattered snifters to fully understand). Inhale. Drink.

It was damn good. And we continued making them until the Cacao was out.

As a side point, angledge called us that evening from Scotland. I'm surprised I remember that point. I'm not surprised that I can't remember our conversation. But it sure was nice to hear from her again. Hopefully she said she's doing well and having a good time with those drunken Scots.

During one brief interlude, fizrep and I altered the concoction slightly using some ingredients buried deep in the fridge. Ahhh, precious coconut rum! Banana, Coconut, and Chocolate must go together, we think, and in a proportion of thirds, they do indeed! Tasty shot that was, yeeeeees... spinning like merry-go-round the room was, young Jedi.

There were other events going on, like a hot tub and fire breathing and stuff, but the drink mixing was by far the most fun and interesting.

So, without further ado, here are the recipes that we created this past weekend. Share and enjoy!

Flaming Monkey
1 part Creme de Cacao
1 part Banana Schnapps
Mix in brandy snifter
Layer Bacardi 151 on top
Chill the palm of one hand with ice or something.
Ignite the Bacardi.
Cover the snifter with chilled hand. Allow the glass to be vacuum sealed to your palm. The glass should be stuck to your hand if good suction was established.
Shake well, but carefully, in case the glass loses adhesion.
Drinker must sniff the fumes after the vacuum is broken, then immediately take the whole shot.

Flaming Coconut Monkey
1 part Creme de Cacao
1 part Banana Schnapps
1 part Coconut Rum
Layer of Bacardi 151 on top
See above for directions on use of fire.

Note that both of the above could be done without the fire, just as a shot of the primary ingredients.

ladybugbutt noted that she was averse to both bananas and coconut. Though such a concept is alien to my mind, I can respect that and tailor a drink for the banana/coconut impaired. With, say, strawberries.
