A good friend at work has some land near Bowie, Tx.
darthcynthia and I went up there yesterday to hang out with my friend (Dave), his wife Cynthia, and another friend from work (Velina).
Velina is the reason I started upping the miles on my walk. In November, Velina is walking in the Komen 3-Day walk for breast cancer, and I figured if a friend is planning to walk 20 miles a day for 3 days in a row, the least I could do is start walking more. (If any of you are in a giving mood, feel free to go
here, click the "Donate to Velina" button, and donate to her effort! Even if it's only a few bucks, every bit helps her do something she's wanted to do for awhile.)
My friend Dave started eating better in January. (I actually saw him pass on a freebie egg roll Friday at lunch...it took becoming a strict vegetarian for me to pass on stuff like that!) He also started walking about a month ago. A visit to an art museum left him feeling wiped out, and hearing Velina and me talk about walking, he strapped on his shoes and made walking a habit.
Since January, he's lost almost 20 pounds!
After a yummy lunch today up at Dave's place, we went for a couple walks.
The hill...taunting from a distance.
Starting up the hill...
After the big hill, there was another hill. At the top of that hill, we decided to turn back.
Heading back toward the top of the hill
My friends and me by the STEEP HILL sign.
I wonder what would happen if somebody hit the hill at even 30 mph...
The obligatory fingers behind the friend's head shot.
(Some things just never get old...to me, anyway!)
Cynthia and me at the top of the hill.
Almost to the steep part.

Dave has a cool
Garmin gadget (maybe he actually has to step up from this one).
Since Dave was checking what the grade we walked down was according to "St. Garmin," he used Velina for stability in case he hit a rock or gravel while not looking where he stepped.
I would have framed the shot better, but I was walking backwards and the screen on our digital camera is hard to see in the sun.
This shot shows the grade a little better.
I think I exerted myself more climbing the hill than I did
last week when I finally hit the 3.1 mile mark while jogging.
Next weekend, it's the
Run to Joe's 5K, and after hitting the hill today, I have even more confidence about next week and the race.
Dave and Velina are walking in the 5K, and
typsygypsy is jogging with me.
I wouldn't be doing the 5K without
typsygypsy, Velina, and Cynthia telling me I could do it, and it's cool that I'm one of the reasons Dave started walking!
On the way home, we turned off Highway 287 and onto 380, to Denton.
After all that walking, there was only one thing to satisfy the appetite we worked up:
GREEK FOOD FROM YUMMY'S IN DENTON!!!
Oh! One other cool thing about the walks and hills today: it makes me want to check out
Enchanted Rock even more!
