I've just finished readig Michael Palin's New Europe for the second time. I love Michael Palin and his travel shows - there's something genuinely nice about him and you can see that he, on the whole, just completely charms the people he meets. Astonishingly, there was only one book that sprung to mind when I saw this. American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I lovelovelove mythology and I love the idea that Neil (and Terry Pratchett uses this too) has that the gods need people - that it was the belief of their worshippers that created them - and now they've been abandoned. I'm reading The Past is a Foreign Country by David Lowenthal in preparation for uni and have just learnt that the original concept in the seventeenth century of a nostalgic affliction wasn't a yearning for the a rose-tinted past, but an actual physical complaint - basically homesickness.
