Day 4. Your guilty pleasure game

I remember being young and loving this game so much and playing it so often that my friends and I started to make up backstories for all the characters (Gas-O had a huge crush on Shorty; ironically, Shorty becomes BFFs with his zombie Dad. Heat and Strike were gay for each other or something? Hiro was the game's woobie-chan...) because we were losers.

The Bust-a-Groove games are exceedingly silly, not terribly challenging (well, they aren't EASY, but their learning curve isn't exactly steep), kind of ugly and pretty repetitive but hoyl shit, they're just so damn fun and feel good and LISTEN TO THAT DAMN SONG.

I WOULD NEVER EVER RUN AWAAAAAAY

I'LL BE HERE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAAAAAAAY

I WOULD MAKE YOU REAAAALIZE I'LL ALWAYS BE RIGHT BY YOUR SIIIIIIDE

NOW OUR LOVE IS SANCTIFIIIIED

I'M HERE TO

BUST

A

MOTHERFUCKING

GROOVE

The first Bust-a-Groove has better music, but the second one has better gameplay, an unnerving final boss and my very favourite character in the series, middle aged zombie-pirate guy, Bi-O!

Day 3. Which of your pairings has the most chemistry?

I had to think about this one for a while because, uh, well I don't really ship a pairing unless it has chemistry, y'know?

So I settled on this one-

Tsubasa is an uneven series. I wasn't so keen on it in the very beginning. It got... really..... really weird at the end. The middle was incredible (and so was a lot of the beginning, after I'd gone back to re-read) but I am not going to lie. The thing that kept me reading throughout the entirety of the series was pretty much 92% just these guys. I'm not that kind of person. I can get girly about romance sometimes, sure, but a lot of my very favourite things of all time lack romantic subplots and this is probably the only thing I've read/played/watched solely for the sake of one relationship. But there is something special about Fye and Kurogane's strange married couple bickering that I guess we could call exceptionally well written chemistry.

Most people who have heard of the series are probably familiar with this- Fye acting like a completely suspicious ditz while Kurogane pops a blood vessel, but it's the serious moments between them that has always sold their connection. Their relationship sort of worked in three stages: tentative figuring each other out (in which Kurogane was always smarter that Fye had guessed and Fye's cutesy act was just as transparent as Kurogane had assumed), the sexy vampire stage (the weird part of the manga where Fye was a vampire and was pissed off all the time because Kurogane saved his life. By making him a vampire. Seriously, Clamp?) and the end of the series where I assumed they started having sex (by which I mean the end of the series where they had obviously started having sex they were finished their character development so neither of them were being cagey weirdos). The tension between them was often palatable and came from the odd phenomenon of meeting someone perfectly suited to you in the least likely and most inconvenient place.

What I like most about the way their chemistry is written is that none of it ever feels forced. Clamp writes plenty of good romance and they have even written very good, under-stated gay relationships (Touya and Yukito in CCS most famously), however I must admit that they fan pander quite a bit in a lot of their later works (Clamp has built a cottage industry on pretty almost-gay-as-aimed-at-teenage-girls, after all) and that sort of thing has always gotten on my nerves (re: my hated of Goho Drug). Fye and Kurogane's moments of almost-romantic/sexual tension are always a natural outgrowth of their conflicting personalities- like here: OH MAN, LOOK AT FYE'S HAIRTWIRL SEXYTIMES ARE ABOUT TO HAPP-

- oh wait, he's just checking out Kurogane's blood-caked robot arm. Yup. But their behaviour in this situation isn't for the sake of titilating fangirls- it's just how they are. Fye is always a flirty creep because being an adorable man of secrets was how he survived. And Kurogane always has very measured reactions to things because he is a goddamned monster who has forcibly learnt to cage his violence.

Clamp is always tight-lipped about whether or not relationships like this are considered "canon" or not, but I'd venture to suggest that this is probably one of the best romances they've ever written either way. Sure, it's got its overblown instances of Clamp-ish melodrama but there's also a surprising (and refreshing) amount of subtly in their development (subtly? In MY Clamp?).

And chemistry, I guess.
