What is your current favorite ship?

except my Shepard was way more adorable ok.

So anyways Mass Effect. If you don't know anything about the way romance functions in Mass Effect, it's kind of a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' deal. All the love interests in the first game are unspeakably lame. All the love interests in the second game are pretty keen.

BUT

THERE'S THIS ONE GUY

THIS ONE GUY WHO STANDS ABOVE THE REST AS THE MOST OBVIOUS CHOICE

THIS ONE WEIRD BIRD/LOCUST/WTFEVER SEXY PIECE OF XENOPHILIA.

Garrus Vakarian is a party member in both the first and second Mass Effect games. His thing is that he used to be a space cop but he was bad at that because of his various (adorable) personality flaws and decided instead that his true calling was to follow Commander Shepard around the galaxy like the universe's most bad ass lost puppy dog. If you choose the Paragon (GODDAMN AWESOME HERO OF LIGHT AND AMAZING) path in the first game, you teach Garrus all about how being a vigilante is stupid and you shouldn't do it. If you choose Renegade (REPREHENSIBLE SEXY ASSHOLE) path you teach him all about how making your own justice is fucking awesome. Either way he's got a bit of a "golly gee Shepard" thing going on.

In Mass Effect 2, he returns as an extremely fail vigilante with excellent technical skills and a stupid nickname. And then you can have awkward alien sex with him.

I admit that I was pre-disposed to like this romance option because my boyfriend has the biggest mancrush on Garrus ever and wouldn't shut up about it, but seriously. The Shepard/Garrus friendship feels like a very natural and integral aspect of the Mass Effect Universe. By the end of the second game this guy is your bro. He's your partner, he's the guy who always has your back and you are a person who changed his entire world. The shift of the relationship from friends to romance is written in an affably awkward way ("How does work human sex?") where Shepard plays it off as a friends with benefits thing while Garrus tries to act cool but is all like: "dkjfhdskjfhsdkjfhdkjfhdskf Shepard is the greatest person in the Universe oh my god." I kind of like that inequality in the relationship; Shepard depends on Garrus, but he needs her. The aforementioned boyfriend and I had a lengthy conversation about who we thought would be returning in ME3 a while back, and this exchange sort of sums it up.

Him: "Garrus will probably come back. Probably."
Me: "Where else would he go? He has nothing left besides following Shepard anymore."
Him: "Ha ha, oh right. Lol Garrus."

So in summation uh... it's an adorable comrade-in-arms kind of ship with a very understated romantic component and just the right sprinkle of darker connotations to appeal to me.

Also: "Your waist is very... supportive."
