Lately the sunsets have been just amazingly colorful. Brilliant reds and purples and oranges. Because it's been a dry spring and summer so far, I have to wonder if that has anything to do with the colors. I recall a year or so ago when there were huge fires in Canada that that was one of the reasons we were having really vibrant sunsets.
Also because of the dry spring and summer, we have no fungus to kill off the gypsy moth caterpillars, which I didn't know had a fungus that killed them. So this year is a banner year for the little bastards. They are defoliating at rates not seen since the 80's. though I have to say that around us, there has been not too much damage. And that canker worms didnt' do much damage this spring either. So at least for us, that has been a blessing, or rather for our trees. Though now we have the drought to endour.
I did devise a way to get water to our younger trees. I would like to be able to put those tree bags on them to keep them watered, but that's money that would go down the drain because I'm sure they would be stolen or destroyed. So instead I took the big plastic containers from the kitty litter and filled them with water and put a small hole in the bottom so the water will trickle out. And I just zip tied them to the trees. If they get stolen... well not great loss. Hoping they remain though, since they seem to be working.
Today we went to the neighbor's in-laws house on the beach for some grub and July 4 festivites. It was nice, a bit hot, but some time out. I'm loving these dry, cool nights. I know it's aweful and we need the rain, but the lack of humidity is so nice. Just so nice.
