The Setup:
Using the letter P, list 10 songs and then give their significance. THe challenge, make them all from the artists Tom used., while ensuring that I could actually listen to them.
Protection- Ben Folds, off of the Speed Graphic LP
The theme of this letter is, "bands tom used that I can actually stand." In this case, protection is one of those above average songs that I probably like only because the rest of the LPs in the last couple years suck. I would have picked the demo version, but the quality is too poor. (Yes I could have picked philosophy, but I didn't- go fuck yourself)
Pulsing Pulsing- XTC, off of Rag Bone Buffet: Rare Cuts & Leftovers,
This is one of the first XTC songs I could stand, probably because it's just over 1:30 seconds long. I'm pretty sure that the majority of people reading this would hate this song, which is just another reason I enjoy it.
Prolouge, August 29th, 1968- Chicago, off of Chicago Transit Authority
Much more stomachable then "Free form Guitar," this song is important because the album is very good; thus, you always have to suffer through this song if you want to enjoy the rest of an awesome debut album, even if it has hippy overtones.
Purple Toupee- They Might Be Giants, off of Lincoln
Clearly better than the other TMBG songs that start with P, such as "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head," "Pencil Rain," and, "Particle Man." Its one of those songs that if people asked me, "make me a CD of TMBG song," I'd put on the Cd, because it wouldn't scare them. Probably one of my favorite 7 TMBG songs. Tom didn't have, "For Science" on his list, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't have.
Papas Got A Brand New Bag- James Brown, off of James Browns Greatest Hits
I won't put on any Simon and Garfunkel on this list on principal. However, this song (and artist) are clearly better. No one hates this song, because it is awesome. And you can play it in a black dinner, and no one will attempt to murder, or suprise sex you.
Polly- Nirvana, off of Nevermind
"Polly wants a cracker, I think I should get off her first." Possibly the best song about man-bird sex ever. Also, I can listen to this and not think of blowing up Seattle, unlike tom's selection. Also, Nevermind is amazing, besides the whole naked baby thing.
Polonaise in A flat major, op. 53- Chopin, performed by Vladamir Ashkenazy
This is the music used as the theme to "Oliver Cromwell," by Monty Python- Unfortunately, "Oliver Cromwell." does not start with "p." Polonaise, though, does. I did contemplate using "Penis Song," but I thought that would be WAY to easy.
Pusher, The- Blind Melon, off of Nico
Let's be honest, NO ONE listens to Neko Case. But, this Blind Melon song of the ALBUM Nico, is a great cover )read: better than the orignal by 2000%) of the original Steppenwolf song. Also, I have to inclue Blind Melon on any music list, on principal.
Poor Mary Lane- Moxy Fruvous (ignore my lack of umlauts), off of Wood
An intesting fact, an anagram of Moxy Fruvous is Morousy xvf. Also, no matter what the song, I'd rather listen to Fruvous than Morissey- unless it's Wood is also a great album. And this is an awesome song
Please Let Me Wonder- Beach Boys, off of The Beach Boys Today!
Little known fact, when I was little the Beach boys were one of my top three favorite bands. Can you guess the rest? Probably, yes. This song is moderately decent, and isn't about plants. It's also not by the Beachels. That makes it acceptable.
Easy.
Yeah, I'll do a real "Music Paul loves that begins with P" later, possibly with pictures. The challenge needed to be met first.
