I’m a mother with two teenage sons. This means I supervise and assist with homework, I drive them to school and to sport and other activities, I wash and iron clothes, I cook and do housework. All without a word of thanks.
I also assist the clubs that my boys belong to, usually on the committee or management area. I’m also an active member of the group that supports parents of premature infants, because of their birth. ‘Thank you’s are received for these activities, generally at the end of the season.
I do these tasks without complaint because I love doing them and because they are for the people I love and care for. But a thank you helps.
I should know the value of a thank you, the pleasure it gives, even though the tasks will be done with or without appreciation. Those two simple words can make your day. They can make it easier to work the long and odd hours.
I have forgotten that others appreciate a thank you too.
I joined Forward Motion in December 2005, I ‘discovered’ FM Chat in January 2006. Before then I had particaipated in Nano ’05 and met people of a similar ilk (writers) and participated in a forum/chat that had less than 20 members, a quarter of whom were active, sometimes. I had previously found and joined one display site and two critique internet groups, and received some praise and lots of criticism, harsh ones that told me I needed to improve my writing or give up.
I went searching for someone, something, a site that would help me improve, preferably free.
I found Forward Motion.
I live on, by, and with FM now. Logging on to the forums and to chat is close to a daily occurrence. My friends, and I do class them as true friends, have encouraged me, helped me and critiqued me to become a much better writer. A writer that is starting to consider that I might be able to make money out of this hobby and joy.
Since joining I have dropped the groups I had belonged to, tried and rejected others, searched for, found, tested and rejected learning sites. The only new activities I have continued with are the two writers groups I have join in my area. And whilst I enjoy talking to fellow writers in person, I learn little from participating in those groups.
Everything I have learnt, all of my improvements, all of my confidence and satisfaction comes directly via FM and chat.
Without FM I would not be the writer I am today
Without FM I would not have the friends I have, nor would those friendships span the world.
Without FM I would have given up writing.
Thank you Zette.
