Hubby raced this past weekend. Took his Mistress out and put her through her paces. She performed well, nothing broke and he ended up coming second in his class. The guy who came first is a good mate, known him for years. Like most Aussie mates a compliment between them takes the form of an insult, with a smile. An insult is the same words delivered with a different voice or different look, sometimes.
To non-Aussies it must sound weird.
This mate is consistently better, faster on the track. Mind you he's spent about three times as much on his car, still lives at home, and has no attachments. There's no animosity, just a cometitive rivalry between the two. But they help each other out with regards to tinkering with thier cars.
Anyway, after one run hubby did, where he took an unplanned detour across the grass, this mate commented to my sons. "Your Dad drives like a girl." The ultimate insult.
My son, the one who struggles with words and is definately not quick at comebacks, immediately pipes up. "I didn't know you were my father?"
Mate, who always has a word to say, was stunned.
Nice one kid. You'll survive.
