Appa, can we keep them?
[Insung (appa) x Kyunsoo (adeul)]
It's a beautiful sunny afternoon and Jo Insung hums a tune as he walked to his son's kindergarten. Usually Hyojin is the one that picks Kyungsoo up, but Insung thinks his 4 year old will be happy to see him today instead. After all, he has been away for the last month filming his latest drama.
Nodding and greeting random parents, Insung squeezes through the crowd and places himself in the front, right by the gate of the kindergarten. With his sunglasses placed securely on his nose, he hopes no one will recognize him. Insung slouches a bit and lowers his head to try and blend in more with the rest of the parents.
Then, the bell rings loudly from inside the kindergarten gate and giggling children burst through their classroom doors. They revive the yard from its earlier silent state and as the gate slowly opens, children ran towards their parents who awaited them with open arms. Skilfully avoiding many charging toddlers, Insung shifts around his spot as he keeps his eyes locked on the yellow door of his son's classroom. A few minutes later, a small boy with round eyes and a cute mushroom cut appears at the doorway and he walks out of his classroom while rubbing the back of his hand. With a slight frown on his face, the young boy scans the crowd of parents for his mom; but when he saw his dad instead, his eyes widen in shock and his mouth gapes open. Insung couldn't help but chuckle at Kyungsoo's surprised face; it reminds him so much of this animated penguin his son loves. He kneels down with an amused smile hanging loosely on his face and spreads his arms wide open at the boy. “Kyungsoo-yah!” He shouts his son’s name happily. The young boy snaps out of shock and dashes towards his dad. His plump lips are formed into the usual heart shape smile and pure happiness radiated from his childish face. With a soft thump, the young boy crashes into Insung's embrace.
"Appa!" Kyungsoo squeals and snuggles against his father's cheek. Insung squeezes his son in a big bear hug and nuzzles him, enjoying the feeling of baby soft cheeks.
"Appa, when did you get home??" The young boy asks with his eyes widened again in pleasant surprise. Insung kisses Kyungsoo all over his face, causing the boy to giggle and squirm.
"Today, when you were in kindergarten. Did you miss Appa?" Insung asks and Kyungsoo nods his head dramatically, making himself dizzy. Insung laughs at his son's silliness and hugs him closer. "Appa missed you a lot too!" He says and Kyungsoo flashes him another one of his adorable heart shape smiles.
As they begin their journal home, with Kyungsoo still in his arms and singing a nameless song, Insung notices the Spongebob band aid on the back of the boy's chubby hand. He grabs hold of the small hand and inspects the yellow bandage.
"What happened? How did you hurt yourself?"
Kyungsoo stops his singing and also stares at the band aid. "Jongdae scratched me earlier."
Insung frowns and looks straight into Kyungsoo's clear eyes. "Why did Jongdae scratch you? Did you get into a fight again?"
"Sorta..." Kyungsoo looks away and wiggles in his dad's arms, "well, we were having a pillow fight after nap time because Chanyeol hit me with his pillow first. So then Baekhyun helped me hit him back, and then I hit him in the eye by accident... but I apologized really quickly and hugged him really tight to make sure he's alright! Then..." The boy's voice got quieter as he talked and he sneaks a look at his dad. Insung's face was serious but he nods at his son to continue his story.
"Then Jongdae came by and started to hit me and Chanyeol, saying I was bullying Chanyeol. He was too when he started hitting Chanyeol! Then Chanyeol got up and he started to hit Jongdae really hard saying I'm not a bully. I tried to pull them apart and that's when I got scratched..." Kyungsoo finishes his story and looks apologetically at his dad. Insung thinks he's son looks like a puppy but he maintained his stoic face.
"So it was an accident." He says and the boy nods earnestly. Kyungsoo lifts up his hand in front of Insung's face and pouts.
"Will you kiss it better? It still hurts."
No longer able to keep a straight face at Kyungsoo's cuteness, Insung chuckles and gently kisses the band aid. "There, all better!" The heart shape smiles returns to Kyungsoo face and he wraps his short arms around his dad's neck to hug him.
The father and son stroll leisurely down the winding roads towards their home and Kyungsoo chatters animatedly about his friends in kindergarten and all the amazing things he did in the past month. Insung listens attentively, giving exaggerated reactions here and there much to Kyungsoo’s liking, and watches his adorable son with soft, loving eyes. ‘He’s just so squishy’, Insung thinks as Kyungsoo puffs his cheek to imitate the hamster his class has recently started to raise and unconsciously he reaches to pinch the boy’s pink cheeks.
“Appa, stoooop,” Kyungsoo whines cutely and Insung responds by tugging on his son’s cheeks more. The two messes around a bit more until Kyungsoo’s attention was captured by a cardboard box by the side of the street. On the front of the box, a note says ‘please take us home and love us’, and two tiny kittens, one black and one white, peak at the outside world from the edge of the box. Spotting the kittens, Kyungsoo’s eyes light up. He squirms around and tries to get down to the ground. “Down, appa, down!”
Insung places his impatient son on the ground and follows behind the boy as he beelines towards the box. Little fingers clutching tightly on the edge of the box, Kyungsoo bits on his bottom lip from excitement and he watches the kittens intensely with sparkly eyes. The tiny black kitten yawns and stretches on the floor while the white kitten stares back at Kyungsoo and tentatively reaches out his paw. Shyly, Kyungsoo extends his fingers and touches the small paw. The white kitty then lowers his paw and licks the small boy’s finger while the black kitty comes closer, rubs the top of its head on Kyungsoo’s small hand and purrs. Feeling braver and more excited, Kyungsoo reaches out his other hand and begins to pet both kitten each in one hand. He turns around with sparkly eyes and shouts eagerly: “Can we take them home, appa? Please???”
Insung was afraid his son was going to ask that. Though he has to admit, the combination of Kyungsoo and the kittens is adorable and he really wouldn’t mind seeing this every day at home. However, his wife probably won’t be happy with the kittens, since most likely she will end up being the one raising them. But he also can rarely say no to Kyungsoo because let’s face it, Insung is an “adeul-babo” (adeul = son); he is willing to do anything for his son, including going against his wife and facing her wrath just so Kyungsoo will smile at him. Hearing no reply from his dad, Kyungsoo continues to send puppy eye attacks at the silent man while petting the kittens. He purses his red lips into a pout as he spots the slight frown on his dad’s handsome face. In a softer tone, Kyungsoo begs again, batting his long lashes innocently.
“Please appa, can’t we take them home? They will be all alone and cold if we leave them here. And the like me, see?” The kittens purr at Kyungsoo’s gentle touches, “They will miss me if I leave them here and I will miss them too. Let’s just take them home, please? I promise I will take care of them!” Tears begin the well in Kyungsoo’s big eyes. He picks up both kittens and holds them close to his small body. Sending one last tearful puppy eyes to his dad, Kyungsoo makes a silent plead.
Feeling his heart clinching in pain at the sight of his son’s sad face, Insung sighs and succumbs to Kyungsoo’s pleading. “Alright, let’s take them home.”
In a flash, the boy’s face turns from cloudy to sunny and he cheers loudly as he spins around. The kittens meow in protest at the boy’s reckless spinning and Insung quickly steps in to calm his son. “Woah, careful!” he says as he steadies an already dizzy Kyungsoo, “You better take good care of them, okay Kyungsoo? Or else umma might toss them back on to the street again.”
The young boy nods his heads frantically. “I will, I promise!” He looks down at the two kittens in his arms tenderly. “I’m going to name you guys Kai and Sehun. You’re Kai,”Kyungsoo nods to the tiny black feline first, then the white one, “and you’re Sehun.” Insung watches with a warm smile at his little boy and the two kittens. Sure his wife will be mad when they return home, but it’s worth it, Insung thinks. He will do anything that makes Kyungsoo happy; after all, he’s an ‘adeul-babo’.
So Kai and Sehun went home with Kyungsoo and they lived happily ever after. Or at least until Kai peed on the carpet and Sehun knocked Hyojin’s vase off the shelf, but that’s another story!
