I've had the trotskys for over a week now, so I guess it's not your typical food-related problem. It feels a lot like the time I had giardiasis. The last time I had it, I picked it up in Ashgabat, also in Central Asia.

We had a good weekend. We went to a local park that has carnival rides and the like with my boss and our language teacher. We're nowhere near the explosions. I was due to go to Bukhara Saturday night to stay until Tuesday, but that has been cancelled. Much of what is out there is rumor, but whatever way you look at it, my heart goes out to the people of Kagan and Bukhara.

Throughout my nomadic career, people ask me this question and I never know how to answer it. Societies and locations are so complex as to make any short answer meaningless and I'm pretty certain, having seen enough glazed looks in my day, that the questioner doesn't want the long answer ( Read more... )

The talk went very well. I had people come up to me all throughout the conference to tell me how much they enjoyed my talk. Several of the other speakers said, "I'm sorry I don't have chocolates to give you. . ." and everyone would laugh. Finally! I'm in an internet cafe and for some reason I couldn't log on to LJ. Anyway,google images of Bukhara (or Bukharo) and you'll see where in the silk road I am .
