[Intro] "The road is long..."

The first thing that came to mind was the chill. It was different than the spray of the sea... The second was that the ground below him was indeed ground. Blinking sleepily, the great black dragon lifted his head and yawned. Blinking, Temeraire looked around. This wasn't the deck of the Alliance. Had they come to Australia already? How did he get off the ship then? Laurence would know. It had to be his doing, he was always looking out for him.

"Laurence?" Temeraire looked down at his forelegs, searching for his captain. Not there... "Oh!" There was a house in the distance. Perhaps he'd been called inside there? That must be it. He should wait outside for him to come and explain things to him.

Which is how a rather large, black dragon has come to be moving carefully up to the mansion and, taking care not to crush anything under foot (it wouldn't do to be rude without knowing what was going on after all), began to look expectantly around.

He was rather hungry...

Other relevant info: Uh... It's a dragon? A really big dragon, but he's friendly, honest! Warning to the first commenter though: he'll be kind of antsy without Laurence around. Make that very antsy. And unhappy. Which might be bad.

The subject line and the cut line are from a poem by Fang Gan called "You Do Not Come" and reads:

The road is long, and east or west, I have no-one to ask,
The cold has come, but I've not place to send your cold weather clothes.
When you left, we'd just planted the tree before the hall,
The tree already bears a nest, the person's not returned.
