[Open Post] Scream in the Night

Oct 16, 2012 15:02

Late at night, Dancy is on watch, as she'd promised Hisoka: she's not accustomed to working with anything like a team, but this makes up for the fact that her angel seems to have forsaken her in this strange place. It keeps her busy: idle hands were the devil's best tools, her grandmother always said ( Read more... )

This being one of Hisoka's watches as well, he is patrolling the halls, katana slung at his back. He woud normally take a different part of the building than other members of the watch, but these October nights are chilly even inside the house. He has just just run up to his own fourth floor room in the east wing, near the stairwell, to grab his jacket. Still on the same floor, he is well along the hall leading back to the main part of the house when he hears the dreadful sound as clearly as Dancy does, and stops in mid-stride, trying to identify the direction. He turns towards it, jacket in hand, and then bolts along the corridor.

He may meet Dancy if she is coming towards him or if she catches up with him .

Something shorter than he and considerably paler bolts around a corner of the hallway, nearly colliding into him. She skids to a stop, looking up at him. She's not scared, as she doesn't scare easily, but she looks a bit on edge.

"Did you hear that noise?" she asks.

"Yes, I did," he answers, "and I did not like the sound of it, not one bit. Remember that serial killer I told you about?" He looks a bit on edge himself. Not exactly frightened, but highly alert and gearing up for a fight.

"Yeah. I remember that," she says, glancing over her shoulder. "You think it might be him?

"I usually don't track people but, sometimes you have to. Sometimes they're worse than that the things that come out of the night." Case in point the orderly who tried to use her. Or the old man with the panther-shifter in a cage...

It turns out the yelp was coming from the kitchen, though with all the cooking that's been going on in there, it's as damp as a cellar can be. And Genie, busy singing and cooking as she was, burned herself against the stove.

It's minor, the size of a penny, but it's a third degree burn that makes her panic a little.

Is this what it would feel like, if Warren were to somehow lose control?

And so if Dancy were to show up, she would find a French girl crying helplessly in the kitchen.

Dancy was double-checking the ground floor, when she comes into the kitchen, finding Genie in pain. "Was that scream I heard you? You all right there?" she asks.

That makes Genevieve turn crimson, and she's stuttering her answer, somewhat unintelligibly.

"I'm sorry -- I didn't mean to be a bother, I -- I----"

"No need to be: you look like you need help," she says. "Better put some ice on it: I can fetch it for you," she offers.

She's wishing her gran was here right now: she knew about the kinds of roots and things that help ease a burn.

It's late, so Tom's in bed, but whatever weirdo magical stuff is going on is making it hard for him to sleep. He can feel it, and it's creeping him out. He tosses and turns for a while, then gives up and decides to get out of bed.

But it's dark, and he can't see where he's walking, so he ends up tripping over a roll of fabric he left lying on the floor.

Dancy might hear a small yelp coming from one of the bedrooms, if she happens to be walking past.

She's making her way along a hallway, keeping her ears and eyes peeled for anything suspicious, which is when she hears the yelp. She scurries down the carpeting, following the cry, tracking it to one of several doors. She'll knock on them, one after the other, calling in to them, till she comes to Tom's.

"Are you all right in there?"

"Crap. Crap!" Tom says, blushing, and scrambling to get up, knocking a few things over in the process. "Yeah, I'm fine," he calls. "I just, um, tripped over some chiffon."

"Mind if I come in to check? Just want to be sure you're all right," she calls in to him. That clatter of stuff makes her a bit worried. People sometimes minimize things out of embarrassment.

It's late, but Gingalain's still up, wandering the corridors, because walking around in the dark feels a bit like an adventure. It's fun.

He is very easily amused.

Since he's not magically gifted himself, he can't feel anything unusual, so he's completely happy and oblivious.

He might hear footsteps creeping along in the hallway, and a girl turns the corner suddenly, a small, pale girl in her mid-teens, clad in shapeless, rather boyish garments, her hand on the pocket on the leg of her trousers.

"Did you hear that awful scream?" she asks.

"No," Gingalain says, expression going from happy and careless to serious and knightly in an instant. "Is someone in trouble?"

"Not sure, maybe," she says, glancing down the hallway. "Could've been someone having a nightmare. Could be something worse. Sounds like it came from the lower floor."
