[Open Post] Scream in the Night

Oct 16, 2012 15:02

Late at night, Dancy is on watch, as she'd promised Hisoka: she's not accustomed to working with anything like a team, but this makes up for the fact that her angel seems to have forsaken her in this strange place. It keeps her busy: idle hands were the devil's best tools, her grandmother always said ( Read more... )

This being one of Hisoka's watches as well, he is patrolling the halls, katana slung at his back. He woud normally take a different part of the building than other members of the watch, but these October nights are chilly even inside the house. He has just just run up to his own fourth floor room in the east wing, near the stairwell, to grab his jacket. Still on the same floor, he is well along the hall leading back to the main part of the house when he hears the dreadful sound as clearly as Dancy does, and stops in mid-stride, trying to identify the direction. He turns towards it, jacket in hand, and then bolts along the corridor.

He may meet Dancy if she is coming towards him or if she catches up with him .

Something shorter than he and considerably paler bolts around a corner of the hallway, nearly colliding into him. She skids to a stop, looking up at him. She's not scared, as she doesn't scare easily, but she looks a bit on edge.

"Did you hear that noise?" she asks.

"Yes, I did," he answers, "and I did not like the sound of it, not one bit. Remember that serial killer I told you about?" He looks a bit on edge himself. Not exactly frightened, but highly alert and gearing up for a fight.

"Yeah. I remember that," she says, glancing over her shoulder. "You think it might be him?

"I usually don't track people but, sometimes you have to. Sometimes they're worse than that the things that come out of the night." Case in point the orderly who tried to use her. Or the old man with the panther-shifter in a cage...

"Sometimes they are," agrees Hisoka, fervently. "And if Rudy's got hold of another person, I will kill him." Actually, he would kill him anyway, on sight. "We have to hurry. That cry sounded like it came from one of the lower floors. Was that your impression?" He is already heading for the nearest stairwell.

"Sounded like it came from the basement. Don't think it did: that's too far from up here," she says, following him, a couple steps behind him.

"True," says Hisoka, thinking. "When the Basement Bar is open, I don't hear the racket up here. So do you think there is some kind of illusion involved? Might this be a ghostly or sorcerous event?"

"It's something... not human, if that's what you mean," she says. "I've been getting a weird feeling since a few minutes before that howl. Not sure what it is, but it's making my skin crawl."

Hisoka has halted at the top of the stairwell. Dancy's right, best to use one's extrasensory perception before going off half-cocked, as he was about to do. He was so fixed on the idea of it being Rudy Cooper that he hadn't really considered another possibility. He makes a conscious effort to lift his psychic shields, and the minute he does, in comes the weirdness.

"Oh...that," he says, after a minute. "Well, how would you suggest we proceed? You haven't got your angel and I haven't got all my former powers, either, but we're not without resources."

[The ghosties and goblins and goblins and things that go bump in the night must be gearing up for Halloween. :D]

"I'd say we track that feeling till I'm sensing it at its strongest: we get up close to it, we'll most likely find what's causing it," she says. "Like a bloodhound getting a scent and tracking something.

"So you're... something not entirely earthly yourself?" she asks.

No doubt they're not above having some fun with the pair...

"Sounds good to me," agrees Hisoka. He'll use his own psychic tracking skill, but he's curious about Dancy's, and he is sure she is top-notch at it, so he is content not to take the lead.

"You can say that again," he replies to her query about not being exactly earthly. "When I died in my first life, I became a shinigami, basically, a Reaper. And then when I died again, I was reborn into another world, but I was not entirely earthly then, either. I was a merman. And I was a bit of a naga in my first life as well. Clairvoyance in both heritages."

"Which direction did you want to start off in?" He looks around, takes a breath, and drops his filters altogether. Wham! More stuff than he can use...

[I'm up for whatever kind of fun you can think up.^^]

She might take a half-step back: she's met a lot of things, but this is a first. "You're a Reaper? You're not here to collect my soul, are you?" she asks, a bit wary but certainly not enough to try and run. Though she knows even if she did, it wouldn't make a bit of difference: no one in their right mind tries to outrun a Reaper.

She recovers after a moment. "I say we go down to the lower levels: the sound came from down there, stands to reason it would be down there somewhere."

Once Hisoka drops his filters, It might take a moment, but he'll sense a mixture of things: unconscious contentment from quiet sleepers, a few restless ones with troublesome dreams, and more than a few auras of apprehension from the people who were awake or awakened by the noise.

And over all of them hovers a nasty aura, like the psychic equivalent of a vile smell....

"I'm not here to collect your soul," Hisoka is quick to reassure her. "I guess you could say I'm a non-practicing Reaper. Or an unemployed one, maybe. Okay, down to the lower levels it is, then." He turns to the staircase again.

The dreamers are filling the air with visions Hisoka is glad are not his own, and the people who have awakened are causing the atmosphere to vibrate with fright. You'd think that with all the time he spends not listening, his psychic ears would become duller, but no, it is the rather the opposite. And the overarching aura! -- what the hell does it belong to??

Their feet sound softly on the stairs as they descend quickly.

She might pause on the stairs, as if listening, and she winces a bit. "Is it getting stronger, or is it me?" she says. And the nastier sensation might seem like it's gotten more noticeable.

And there's footsteps as someone else is coming up the stairs from below....

"It's not just you," Hisoka starts to say, and then he hears the footsteps from below. He reaches behind him to pull his katana from it's shoulder sheath, but he doesn't automatically assume the footsteps belong to the owner of the aura. He is simply being wary.

There's a tall, lean shadow striding up the stairs, it's shadow angling up the wall ahead of it, then a dark man, clad in a white tee shirt and grey sweatpants, a handgun in both hands at the ready, ascends.

Reese was asleep, dreaming of closing in on wherever Turing might be holed up with Finch, wandering through a non-OSHA-compliant warehouse, following the sounds of a pained whimper... until he awoke, realizing that the noise is coming from somewhere in the house. And then the watchdog in him was awakened and he had to find the source of it.

He looks up at the two of them from a landing several steps below, lowering the gun. "Either of you hear that scream?" he asks.

Dancy relaxes a bit. Just a human. Just a plain vanilla human. Not a very pleased one, but an ordinary man.

Randomizer picked this fellow out... have a plain vanilla human to accompany the supernaturally gifted folk!
