Fic post #1: untitled Bones ficlet (Wendell/Hodgins, PG13)

May 11, 2009 23:00

People left some great key party comment fics in my last post ( which you should totally check out), and since it was my idea, I felt I should contribute something of my own. I didn't write the CSI fic, because that's going to have to be long to do it justice, and I have to do actual work at work this week. Well, through tomorrow night, anyway, ( Read more... )

Jack waits until Wendell's next rotation in the lab to do it. He's not sure why, because they've seen each other since then, and there have been a couple dates where he's carried the thing around in his pocket the entire time without ever bringing it up. And it's not like he can claim he forgot about it -- even he couldn't sell a story like that -- but somehow the time just hasn't been right.

The first night they're surrounded by Wendell's friends, and there's no way they're having that conversation in front of Grace, let alone the rest of them. The next time they go out it's to the last hockey game of the season, and drinks with the team after the game isn't really the time either. He can't do it while they're at his house, at least without ruining the effect a little, so instead he waits until the next time Wendell turns up at the lab.

"Morning," he says when he finds Wendell alone in one of the labs, leaning in to breathe in the scents of aftershave and familiar shampoo. Expensive shampoo, and he likes that Wendell uses his stuff when he stays at Jack's house.

"Hey," Wendell says, glancing over long enough to flash a bright smile. "Long time no see."

Jack laughs at the inside joke, pictures Wendell stretching against his pillows just this morning and flushes a little at the memory. If he tries he can still feel those hands on him, still hear the sleepy 'mmm' Wendell let out when Jack leaned in to kiss him awake. He leans a little closer, letting his chest press up against Wendell's arm as he pretends to be interested in whatever Wendell's working on. "So," he says, keeping his voice low, "do you feel like coming over again tonight?"

"Depends. What'd you have in mind?" Wendell asks, still smiling even as he glances toward the doorway to make sure no one's watching them.

"Well, I know how much you enjoy key parties," Jack answers. He slides his hand into the pocket of his lab coat and then draws it back out again to hold his fist in Wendell's field of vision. The blush is already creeping up his neck, and it's all Jack can do not to lean in and press his mouth against the heat he knows is rising in pale skin. He turns his fist palm up and opens his hand, smiling as he watches Wendell's eyes widen. "Takes a little of the surprise out of it if you're not picking from a bowl, but at least you get to keep this one."

His heart's pounding hard in his chest, and he's not really sure why. There's no reason Wendell would turn down the offer; they already spend so much time at Jack's place that it's just practical for him to be able to let himself in. It means no more driving across town to his dorm to pick him up after a long work day, and Jack really likes the idea of coming home to a house that's not quite as empty as usual. Still, he holds his breath while Wendell reaches for the key, fingers closing around it and just holding it for a second before he looks up at Jack.

He opens his mouth to say something, but changes his mind halfway through. Then he looks at the door again before he closes his free hand around the front of Jack's lab coat and hauls him forward for a hard, thorough kiss. It's the first time he's ever kissed Jack in the lab, and when he lets go Jack's head is spinning so much that it takes him a few seconds to remember where they are. Not at his house, he reminds himself before he presses for more, because he might be able to surprise one stolen kiss out of Wendell, but he knows better than to expect much more when Dr. Brennan could walk in any second.

"Okay," he finally says, matching Wendell's thousand-watt grin with what he assumes is an equally dopey expression. "So I'll see you later."

"Definitely," Wendell answers, sliding the key into the pocket of his jeans as he watches Jack walk away. He finally turns when he reaches the doorway, the weight of Wendell's gaze heavy on his back as he heads back to his own work station. And the work day just got a whole lot longer, but he has a feeling it'll be worth it when they get home.

but at least you get to keep this one.

Seriously made me sigh like a goof ball. SO SWEET. I love the idea of Jack over thinking about it and I LOVE the stolen kiss. I am a little over giddy about the idea of Wendell showing up and being able to just open the door and walk in... and Jack hearing the noise and even though he has been waiting for it (he stayed in the front room 'reading' just for this purpose) it kind of makes his heart skip a beat. OMG. Jack. ♥

Aw, sitting in the front room that he never, ever uses because it's too big and formal and totally reminds him of his mom, just so he can hear the key turn in the lock. ♥ times one million.

Jack is such a romantic, too, for all he tries to be curmudgeonly, that you know that's exactly what he'd do.
