The beer will be ready to drink on Sunday. Damn, I'm excited! I opened a bottle at the capoeira party last Saturday and the stuff tastes AMAZING. It was still a little flat, which just means it needs to sit longer. Two weeks is generally the bottling minimum, but sitting for longer is good for flavor. This means the first few bottles on Sunday will be good and the last few bottles (who knows how long that will take) will be better! For my next brewing adventure, I want to make a pumpkin ale. I also want to get a job so I can financially support my brewing habit. Yeah, it doesn't cost much money for the ingredients, but right now my bank account is only getting smaller by the day. With all the economic turmoil, my job hunt has been largely fruitless. I've been applying for office jobs in Worcester and Boston and haven't heard a damn thing. Yesterday I filled out applications for a bunch of retail jobs in the Worcester area. So far I'm being picky with the places I apply for, but I probably won't be able to hold out for longer than a couple of weeks. Blah. At least I have beer to console me.
On Monday I met with my thesis advisor and the rest of his advisees. We advisees are all fairly friendly with each other, so there was a proposal for periodic support group meetings throughout the semester. I mentioned that I am brewing beer, which was met with wide spread approval. Like everyone else in the group, I have to narrow down my topic focus. Actually, I need to stop being completely vague about my topic and actually figure out what the hell I want to do. I tried by writing down a list of key words that I knew I wanted to deal with: HIV/AIDS, policy analysis, power, empowerment, gender, sexuality, and Tanzania. That's way too much stuff for a paper that has to be between 35 and 50 pages. After some thinking I've decided to focus on the implications of Tanzania's current HIV/AIDS policies for women. To assist me with this, I've dug out my copies of James Ferguson's The Anti-Politics Machine and James Scott's Seeing Like a State. I figure all the heavy thinking that goes on in these texts will inspire some heavy thinking to go on in my head.
