Got just the ticket to banish the blues. It was even a cheap bargain one. :-) Am going to see this play
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Recruiting_Officer written by George Farquhar in 1706 next month. Cast includes Mark Gatiss, plus Mackenzie Crook who I always remember as Ragetti (the pirate who kept losing his eye in Pirates of the Caribbean).
The play, described as “an unashamed celebration of love, lustiness and victory in battle and in the bedroom”, had the dubious honour of being the first performed in the colony of New South Wales by convicts of the First Fleet in 1789.
I’ve never been to a restoration comedy before. It sounds a jolly romp. Should be fun - not to mention my first ever visit to the Donmar. Here’s a video from the Donmar themselves showing a music rehearsal. Sorry, I'm unable to embed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxY-gWl9XuE As an added bonus, have discovered the perfect preparation - a recording of a World Service version circa 2004/5 that includes BC in the cast. Haven’t had time to listen to it yet, so don’t ask me what part he’s playing. (Update: He plays the appropriately named gentleman, Worthy.)
Listen on You Tube in two parts:
