It seems they've arrived just in time for the best part. Ned's hand goes slack around Digby's leash as he tilts his head to the sky, watching in slack-jawed wonder. Usually not a fan of loud noises, the pie maker can't bring himself to look away. They're captivating and possibly the best fireworks he's ever seen. "At least they saved the best part for nightfall," he says softly, under his breath, not even sure if she can hear him over the din of the rockets exploding above their heads.

She can hear him just barely. It was times like these she is grateful her hearing wasn't what it used to be. She wouldn't have been able to stand the sound of these beautiful explosions. Shahrazad glances at Ned, a grateful smile on her face. He could have been here hours ago if he wanted. "They did. Thank you for coming with me."

"Of course. Digby and I didn't want to go by ourselves anyway." In fact it had been Shahrazad's presence at all that emboldened him to go. A little patriotism couldn't hurt, right?

Buffy is just arrived, pulling her light jacket around her slightly. She didn't think it was going to be chilly, but maybe if she goes to stand by the grill. Food is always a plus anyway, and if it keeps her warm then so be it. She had shown up with Dawn and Peter but quickly ditched them, on the lookout for anyone else she knew. She needed to do that mingley thing, or something.

Someone spots a familiar head of sun shiny hair in the crowd and doesn't waste any time making her way over. "Buffy!" Clearly no holiday should be spent without bothering her favorite tour guide. Nevermind she has no idea what she is here to celebrate. "I didn't know you were here to celebrate too."

"Oh, hi." She flashes a bright smile, pausing with her hand around a plastic cup full of beer like a kid with her hand stuck in the cookie jar. She decides that it doesn't matter though, after a moment, making her way to Shahrazad's side with her drink in hand. "I am American, I thought I'd get my red white and blue on."

"This is an exciting holiday for your people, isn't it?" She doesn't even know what's in the cup. Her Eternal Mother had strict policies about alcohol. Odds are high she's never even seen this kind. "I'm very honored to share it with you."

[Off to the side, there are more balloons being blown up with a hand pump. Zevran is methodically and grimly working to blow them up. He's also sulking. A sparkly hat sits on a table next to him. He looks like he thinks it might bite.]

[Jack is heading back from bringing more records to the basement, and pauses to eye that hat warily.]

You're not going to wear that, are you?

I most assuredly am not. But the Doctor left it here. I think it may be bewitched.

[comesback]

No, just very sparkly. I think there's glitter all over the car now. [A little sigh.] ...At least it's easier to clean up than the TARDIS would be.

[You want food? How about delicious hot dogs? We've got hamburgers, too. And assorted vegetarian things! ...And two cases of anchovies, what even. Anyway, Ted is manning the grill! Come say hello, bring him a beer, whatever. He'll appreciate it.]

[She approaches with a paper plate in one hand, beer in the other, eyeing the grill hungrily. Buffy is always hungry, but she can't decide what she wants. Such a hard life, but then she remembers Peter's 'trick.']

What would you recommend?

[Ted studies the grill thoughtfully.] Right now, hot dogs? Or burgers. When I have more room there'll be steak, probably. But hot dogs are always a good choice on the Fourth, right?

Hot dog it is, load me up. [with a smile, she holds out her plate] I'll probably be back for steak. Mmm, meat.

Ned is wandering about, hands in his pockets. Digby has been left with Shahrazad so he's free to roam. He moves to set his pie on the dessert table, though it's immediately dwarfed by the rest. Trying not to feel self-conscious about it, he shifts from foot to foot, wondering what to explore first.

Peter is doing the exact. same. thing. Though his wandering has slightly more direction, considering he's using it as an attempt to keep an eye on Dawn instead of actually doing something with himself. But at least there's one more familiar face, and Peter meanders his way over, looking about as out of place as humanely possible.

"Hey, how're you."

[stressbaking]

Giving a half-smile at the familiar face, he shrugged, moving a little closer. "Honestly? Feeling a little out-of-place." He pauses, wondering if that was too forward. "Are you here with someone?"

"I was?" Peter practically snorted, looking more bemused than anything. He might as well stick close to the only other person here who looked as awkward as he did. "I think I only got dragged here to babysit, actually. Not really what I signed up for."
