The Fire Show! daft_old_man July 3 2011, 16:45:30 UTC

It seems they've arrived just in time for the best part. Ned's hand goes slack around Digby's leash as he tilts his head to the sky, watching in slack-jawed wonder. Usually not a fan of loud noises, the pie maker can't bring himself to look away. They're captivating and possibly the best fireworks he's ever seen. "At least they saved the best part for nightfall," he says softly, under his breath, not even sure if she can hear him over the din of the rockets exploding above their heads.

She can hear him just barely. It was times like these she is grateful her hearing wasn't what it used to be. She wouldn't have been able to stand the sound of these beautiful explosions. Shahrazad glances at Ned, a grateful smile on her face. He could have been here hours ago if he wanted. "They did. Thank you for coming with me."

"Of course. Digby and I didn't want to go by ourselves anyway." In fact it had been Shahrazad's presence at all that emboldened him to go. A little patriotism couldn't hurt, right?

"It wouldn't have been as fun without you." She's had more than her fair share of wandering around by herself at three in the morning. It was a shame she had not been born a Terran like Ned or Esther. "This holiday must be very special to have these." Shahrazad points up to the lights above.

"Oh, that's right. You've probably never heard of it. Armageddon." He nodded, acknowledging an earlier conversation of theirs, unable to keep the smile wholly off his face. "It's an American holiday, also known as July 4th or, Independence Day. It was the day America became...well, itself.

"Pie is a traditional dish to have on Independence Day. Especially apple, or blueberry." Thus the pie he had brought along.

Shahrazad lights up at that. She may not know the history but, the sound of it is nice. "That's so exciting. I wish we had a holiday like this at home."

"Do you have other holidays?" he asks, still captivated by the sky.

"Not in particular," she admits. There was no need to bring up they celebrate the lives of the dead. It seemed too festive a day to ruin the mood with that talk.

Ned wouldn't have found it that dreary compared to some, but he takes her answer at face value. "I'm not usually a Holiday-person. But this one's not so bad."

Shahrazad nods in agreement. "It's beautiful and it has a nice sentiment behind it. Are all American holidays like this?"

"A few of them. Most of them except Christmas and Easter--" And that dreaded one Ned didn't like to mention. "And H-Halloween."

"Halloween?" Shahrazad looks a little guarded. Something about the way he said that troubled her.

"You've heard of it?" But there was no recognition on her face; Ned sighs. "It's a holiday where children dress up like scary ghouls and get candy for their trouble."

"I see. Does it frighten you?" There's no judgment in her voice. She genuinely wishes to know.

Caught of guard be the question, he fidgets a little, then shakes his head. "N-not in the traditional sense. I just have bad memories, associated with that date."
