[Off to the side, there are more balloons being blown up with a hand pump. Zevran is methodically and grimly working to blow them up. He's also sulking. A sparkly hat sits on a table next to him. He looks like he thinks it might bite.]

[Jack is heading back from bringing more records to the basement, and pauses to eye that hat warily.]

You're not going to wear that, are you?

I most assuredly am not. But the Doctor left it here. I think it may be bewitched.

[comesback]

No, just very sparkly. I think there's glitter all over the car now. [A little sigh.] ...At least it's easier to clean up than the TARDIS would be.

[niceassassin]

[Tiny huff, barely audible.]

You have nothing better to clean up now, do you?

Beg your pardon?

It's nothing. Forget about it. That should not be hard, yes? After all, you cannot yell at me about it.

Damn it, Zev, I just -- don't want you hurt. You know it was stupid.

[He pumps a balloon extra hard, reining himself in just in time to keep from exploding it.]

No, I should not have drank before contacting her, but--

[A pause. He hadn't mentioned the drinking before. Oops.]

It is not something I normally do.

Well, that explains it. I don't want this to be a normal thing. You're -- ...A friend, alright?

[He stops pumping the balloons long enough to fold his arms over his chest. Why is he so bothered by hearing that? Well, he's not going to think about it. It's definitely not a thing to think about. He's going to be a jerk instead.]

I am new to having friends, so I am certain I am not very good at it. This is only natural.

Yes, well, neither am I and I don't go around provoking people who can disembowel me.

[niceassassin]

[He paces forward, away from the balloon pump and coincidentally closer to the kiddie pool, and points indignantly.]

You play hero with dragons, though. But it is different for you, isn't it? You--

[Well, this is pretty close to public, so he can't say why it's really different.]

You are absolutely insistent on playing hero.

She was eating someone, she killed an innocent person!

[This is a rather annoyed growl.] Well, maybe I need to, to stop some people being idiots!

[Zevran's in front of the pool now. He was still pacing, but has stopped at that annoyed growl. It's kind of a sexy sound. But he's too busy antagonizing Jack to admit that.]

Perhaps it is not your business when people are being idiots. You cannot stop stupidity, you realize. It is a natural thing. For you, too, I suppose, so I shouldn't be surprised.

I never said I wasn't stupid. But if I can't run off and be an idiot, you can't go and get yourself half killed. [He's trying to keep his voice down. It's not exactly working.]
