Merlin was standing at Arthur’s side while Arthur read the threatening letter his father had been sent. “We should send a show of force. That will show them who is right,” Arthur said.
Merlin replied quietly, “Shouldn’t you try diplomacy first?”
Arthur frowned. “It has not worked with this kingdom in the past.”
“But sire, might doesn’t make right.”
“’Might doesn’t make . . .’ Merlin, where did you learn that?”
“When you grow up in a kingdom where the king doesn’t listen to his people, you learn that kind of thing quickly.”
“Merlin, you might just have a point there. I know Cenred doesn’t care for his people. It follows that power and might does not mean one is always right. We have a chance here to do the right thing, and if that fails then we will defend ourselves.”
Merlin smiled. “Arthur, you just might make a good king someday after all.”
“I am just lucky to have a wise manservant. I will give my opinion to my father and see what he says. Hopefully he will agree and we can avert a war. That is something no one needs.”
“Good luck.”
“Thanks for the lesson. I needed that.”
“My pleasure.”
