Never offer to babysit a dragon.

Aithusa was a cute little thing, with baby-blue eyes and a voice that cooed a lot. He was mischievous, too, throwing bottles off shelves, tearing apart jumpers and leaving the yarn all over the flat. Wings waving frantically as he hung from the lamp, then flew over Arthur’s head to land on the back of the sofa and begin to peck at Arthur’s work files. The papers went everywhere.

But Arthur had thought he could handle him, especially when Merlin reassured him that Aithusa would listen to everything he said.
Merlin was a liar who lied.

So, by the end of the night, there was broken crockery and spilled juice and bits of yarn and torn papers and Arthur was so exhausted from chasing him that when Merlin came in and stared down at the two of them, Aithusa tucked into Arthur’s arms, Arthur was too tired to complain, merely opened one eye to glare at Merlin.

“See, I told you he’d listen,” Merlin said, grinning.

Grunting, carefully as to not disturb Aithusa, Arthur got up. “Well, I’ll leave you to it.”

Merlin looked around. “You aren’t going to help clean it up?”

Letting out a snort, Arthur said, “I’m the babysitter, not the cleaning staff. Oh, and by the way, Aithusa learned to breathe fire while you were gone so your room got a bit scorched. And your favourite action figures are… a smidge worse for wear or should I say melted? And he tore up your slippers and the jumper you love and I think your bed could use a bit of care. But yeah, he listened to me all right.”

“But, but,” Merlin sputtered.

Arthur just waved his hand as he fled the flat, Merlin screeching in his wake.

Revenge was sweet. And besides, much as Aithusa was adorable, Arthur would never have to babysit a dragon again.
