“I hope you’ve learned your lesson about interfering with the system, Merlin,” Gaius said, looking down at the young man.

“Yeah, don’t bother going to the king with my concerns. I’m nothing to him,” Merlin replied.

Gaius’s eyes narrowed. “You need to check your attitude. Make sure you treat the royalty only with respect.”

“I’ll give them my respect when they’ve earned it.”

“Merlin . . .”

“Don’t worry, I’ll bow and scrape like the lowly peasant I am.” He frowned. “Whatever happened to the dog I conjured?”

“Dog?”

“Yeah, I animated a dog statue with the same spell I used on Valiant’s snakes . . .” Merlin walked up to the door of his room and opened it slightly to peek in. He was met with growling. “It’s still there.”

“Well, it can’t stay. You’ll have to get rid of it.”

“Okay, okay. Here’s how we’ll do it. You open the door to the corridor and I’ll open the door to my room. Hopefully it’ll trot right out and we needn’t worry about it again.”

“I have my doubts, but it should work.”

“Okay, Gaius, now. Open the door.”

Gaius hurried over to the door and opened it. Merlin opened the door to his room. The dog came out into the main room, but luckily didn’t stay. Gaius and Merlin closed their respective doors then sat down and breathed out sighs of relief.

“You are one lucky young man,” Gaius said.

“Don’t I know it. Now if only I was lucky enough to get dinner?”

Gaius smiled. “On the way.”
