Imperfection

The lesson in polishing was more tedious than anything Merlin had ever experienced in his life, and that was saying something. After one hour, he decided enough was enough.

Every time George looked away or blinked, Merlin used magic to polish a large number of copper, brass, and silver objects. Before another hour was out, every last little metal object in the huge hall shone like the sun.

George was flabbergasted, but he did have the decency to admit that Merlin was the superior polisher. There was no need for George's teaching. Deflated, he left Merlin alone.

Merlin didn't feel too bad about it. George was the perfect, most diligent servant, true. But that was not what Arthur needed. Merlins many imperfections, mishaps, quirks, pratfalls, and practical jokes meant Arthur's days were filled with endless surprises and action. Never a dull moment - that was what Arthur needed, and Merlin provided.
