This is my motivational statement for my Americorps application. The question is: Why do you want to join Ameri-corps? What could you contribute to your Ameri-Corps project? What do you hope to gain from serving as an Ameri-Corps member?
Let me know what you think. This is just a rough draft.
I first learned of Ameri-Corps from a booth at a Tulsa Community Forum and was immediately drawn to the chance to serve my country while traveling in areas of the country I had never been to before. I also believe everyone has an opportunity to make a difference in the world they live in and should make that their duty in life. As a person who has led a blessed life with many opportunities to succeed, I would like a chance to help give others these same opportunities. Many Americans often take for granted being able to read and write, go to college or being able to live in a place they can call their own. I want to stop taking these blessings for granted and help grant others these same blessings.
I would bring many positive attributes to any Ameri-Corps project. My ability to take instruction and criticism while following the commands of a leader have been demonstrated during my time at Tulsa Job Corps, especially during the completion of my projects in Carpentry and Masonry. I try to always do right by others and myself, especially when no one else is watching. I am honest in my work and in my dealings with other individuals. I remain diligently focused on projects I begin and see them through to their completion. I would also bring compassion to my Ameri-Corps project because I do understand what it feels like to live with adversity.
As a person with Asperger’s Syndrome, I have had to overcome adversity and learn how to manage myself in uncomfortable situations. Symptoms of Asperger’s have made it difficult for me to handle large groups of people, extreme noise, and to interpret body language of other people such as facial expression and tone of voice. I have learned to better manage these symptoms and have improved my social skills greatly by exposing myself to more of these situations. I consider membership in Ameri-Corps another opportunity to improve my social skills and to grow as a person. I see chances to improve my communicative abilities and leadership skills as well. I have been given many chances to succeed in life and I want to be a part of an organization that strives to offer others those same opportunities.
