Ok, here is my second draft:
Many Americans often take for granted being able to read and write, go to
college or being able to live in a place they can call their own. As a person
who has led a blessed life with many opportunities to succeed, I would like a
chance to help give others these same opportunities. As stated in the AmeriCorps pledge, I want to help make America “smarter, stronger and healthier
I would bring many positive attributes to any Ameri-Corps project. My ability
to take instruction and criticism while following the commands of a leader have
been demonstrated during my time at Tulsa Job Corps. I have shown my ability
to take initiative during the completion of my projects in Carpentry and
Masonry, such as framing walls for houses and building brick and block walls. I
am honest in my work and in my dealings with other individuals. I remain
diligently focused on projects I begin and see them through to their
completion. I would also bring compassion to my
Ameri-Corps project because I do understand what it feels like to live with
adversity.
As a person with Asperger’s Syndrome, I have had to overcome adversity and
learn how to manage myself in uncomfortable situations. I have improved my
social skills greatly by exposing myself to more people and places. I consider
membership in Ameri-Corps another opportunity to improve my social skills and
to grow as a person. I am attracted to being able to travel and live in a dorm while doing projects to help out my country. I would also like to improve my ability to communicate
effectively and practice my skills in carpentry and masonry. I would consider
it an honor to be a member of an organization that makes such a positive impact
in people’s lives and I thank you for considering my application.
