In England a great many ash trees (g. Fraxinus) have contracted a terminal disease. These are being felled but there is now no market for this timber. The river Arun runs through the small West Sussex town of Arundel. The river is tidal for 41.0km upstream from where it joins the English Chanel at Littlehampton. For reference purposes I photographed two scarab beetles, Geotrupes stercorosus, which I found between the lobes of the fruiting body of the bracket fungus Polyporus squamosus growing on a fallen beech (Fagus) tree in West Sussex.

I have just returned from one week holiday based in Arundel, West Sussex. On Saturday 20th May I drove the 262km from home to the accommodation I had rented. I wanted to spend two or three days trying to find a rare beetle - Erotides cosnardi. This museum was established to rescue examples of buildings in the regional vernacular style. Buildings of importance are painstakingly taken to pieces, each part numbered, catalogued, photographed and detailed surveys of the building in its original state are made. I wrote about the landscape feature known as a "ha-ha" earlier this year (10th May) and the example I used was rather "rustic" and designed to give the appearance of continuous meadow quite a distance from the house.

It makes a pleasant change to see a sculpture that is not vertical or set on a large plinth surrounded by terrace and flower beds.
