"What'cha doin'?"
The question hadn't changed in intonation or phrasing since they were both in elementary school, a lot of inventions and adventures and summer vacations ago. The girl asking it had changed substantially more. She was taller now, still skinny, but also...not skinny, in certain ways that Phineas Flynn would have had difficulty explaining, once upon a time. Not that he ever had difficulty explaining anything for long, but still. This was Isabella. He wasn't supposed to look at her the way that Jeremy looked at Candace.
Times change. Summers come and go. But some things, like the way boys look at girls, are eternal.
"Oh, nothing, really," he said. "Remember when we built the rest stop for Santa? Or when we repaired the polar ice caps? Or the year after that, when we reversed global warming so we wouldn't have to keep repairing the polar ice caps?"
"Yes, yes, and yes," said Isabella. "I also remember the year we were all elves, the year you invented the hot new toy of the season, the year we started a soup kitchen so successful that we ended world hunger for three days, and the year you had the measles. But what'cha doin' now?"
"Wrapping your Christmas present," said Phineas, and smiled that little smile that always made her knees go weak. "Ferb is out of town with Vanessa all weekend. We have the apartment to ourselves. My folks won't be back from England until Christmas Eve. No brothers, no girlfriends of brothers, no folks, no crazy inventions, just...us."
"PHINEAS!" shouted a voice from outside.
"...and Candace," Phineas amended.
To his surprise, Isabella smiled. "This couldn't be the best Christmas ever without a problem to solve. Come on. Let's go solve your sister."
