Synopsis: What does Scott Summers want for Christmas?

Emma always laughs at the diamond commercials that come on around Christmas. Zales and the Diamond Company and a dozen other stores Scott can't keep straight and has given up trying. "Diamonds are a girl's best friend," she'll say. "I suppose that's why I love myself so very extravagantly much." And then she'll kiss him in a way that makes it clear that she was joking, or at least exaggerating, and he won't need any best friends but her, all the way to morning. He gets a diamond every night, and it's so much warmer than anyone who simply saw it sparkle would ever dream.
Scott never buys Emma jewelry. Partially because she says she gets all the jewelry she'll ever need just by standing naked in front of the mirror; partially because he can't afford the sort of thing she's accustomed to; but mostly because every other man she's ever been with has bought her jewelry, earrings and bracelets and diamond necklaces like chips of frozen ice. So he leaves those shining baubles for the past, and he tries to plan a future one battlefield at a time, one hard-won victory and schismed fellowship after another.
But it's Christmas again-Christmas always comes, as patient as the smiling wives in those diamond commercials, waiting for the trinket to prove their true love will be true-and it's time for breaking a few rules. Time for little velvet boxes nestled under exquisitely trimmed trees, and for the one piece of jewelry he knows she's never been given, or at least, never accepted.
Diamonds are forever, or so the old movies say, the ones she watches when she thinks he's asleep. So are some other things, like rubies, and like the hearts of boys who became men, but never lost the art of loving.
Scott Summers waits for Christmas morning, and a question he hopes his diamond, his forever, will be willing to answer.
