Meeting Merav.

So Merav sponsored today (one! step! closer! to CROCODILES!), and I figured that was a good excuse to talk about meeting Merav.

See, I used to have a very cobbled-together personal website, the kind of thing that was SO COOL in 1996, when being able to do your own basic HTML meant that you were at the cutting edge of casual computing. (Seriously, some people who knew even less about computers than I did assumed I was a hacker, because my website had graphics.) And on that website was a page about my favorite traditional ballad, "Tam Lin." And one day I got a really weird email from some chick in New York, telling me how I was just like her best friend, and we should all have slumber parties and do each others nails and it would be AWESOME.

(She did not actually say that, it just read that way to me.)

Um, says I. You're a little creepy, says I. Backing away slowly now, says I.

A few years later, at OVFF, I met this girl with a long brown braid, a faint accent, and a sense of humor like a calico kitten-soft and fluffy and FILLED WITH CLAWS. She told me she'd written the email. I told her she was less creepy than originally believed. And lasting friendship, along with eventually a musical group and a series of novels, was born.

Thank you for being part of my life, Merav. And thank you for sponsoring today.
