It's a very hard lesson; it's a very hard fate
When your faith is ill-given and help comes too late.
It's the tale of Mal Reynolds, a Browncoated fool,
And why good men are bad guys when wicked men rule...
Let me tell you about Mal Reynolds,
The bravest captain you'd ever see.
They always say that the good die young,
Well, he battled for Serenity,
Lost his innocence tryin' to keep the 'verse free.
Some people call him a Browncoat bastard;
Some people say that he goes too far.
He lost his faith but found a family,
He stood his ground and he'll fly once more,
It was the last damn oath that he ever swore.
Now he's a fightin' rebel captain in a Firefly,
You can take away his home but you can't take his sky,
Just go ahead and burn the land and boil the sea.
Because he has his ship and he has his crew,
And you know he doesn't have to run from you,
As you'll hear him say, 'They can't take the sky from me.'
No one's really quite sure what happened;
None of the promised help arrived.
The stakes were high and Mal was praying.
His hope fell, though he survived,
Only dead men made it out alive.
Alliance says that the rebel planets
Deserved the beating they received;
But there's a man forever bleeding,
Once innocent, and twice deceived,
By the very dreams he once believed.
Now he's a fightin' rebel captain in a Firefly,
You can take away his home but you can't take his sky,
Just go ahead and burn the land and boil the sea.
Because he won't talk about righteous men,
Never cry beneath their heels again,
And you'll hear him say, 'They can't take the sky from me.'
'bout three years later the stories started;
They say he's not an easy mark.
They say he's flown the whole 'verse over,
That there's worse than wolves in the border's dark,
That a man can die for a wrong remark.
Some people say that he's just a legend;
Some people say that he's something more.
Here's what I know: when Mal gets restless,
He still knows just what he's flyin' for,
And his heart's still fightin' a hopeless war --
SPOKEN (Simon):
My sister was a good girl. So smart. So much potential. A genuine genius of the highest order. That's why they chose her for their special program. Guess they didn't figure on her being able to get hold of someone who'd understand, because I got her out of their Academy, even though they said I couldn't, even though I knew that she might never be the same...my sister was a good girl. And now she's a mad one.
If you get in his way then you'd best play it squarely,
It's never wise to double-cross a man who's playing fairly,
And he's a man with a past who just can't afford to lose.
SPOKEN (Zoe):
When you got right down to it, Wash was always, without a doubt...Wash. A little sweet, a little stubborn, and a whole lot sure that he knew what was good for him. 'Don't ship out with a rebel captain unless you're sure you want an interesting life', I said, and sure enough, the very next night...well. I guess a blown engine in Reaver space taught him to listen to his wife. Until he hit the boosters, anyway.
He’s not looking for a savior, he’s not looking for a ride,
And you shouldn’t go look for him if you’re not a suicide,
'Cause he'll end you in a way you wouldn't choose.
SPOKEN (Wash):
I guess Kaylee got lucky. She came onboard the ship looking for action, and when she found it, she found herself a bearth at the same time. Yeah. Real lucky. She'll be flying around the black until something brings her to a sudden stop. Keeps saying she likes it out here. If that ship talked to the rest of us, I’d tell it a thing or two...treat her kindly.
If you take him for a fool, well, he'll end you for certain,
But if you get the drop, you just might leave him hurtin',
'Cause he'll try to play you fair unless you try to cut him through.
SPOKEN (Kaylee):
Simon...was an idiot.
He's a little out of hope but he's never out of luck
If you'll give him enough rope then he's sure to run amuck,
So if you feel like winnin', don't let Malcolm play with you.
Let me tell you about Mal Reynolds --
Might be the last thing you’ll ever see.
They always say that the brave die young,
Well, he battled for Serenity,
Lost his innocence tryin' to keep the 'verse free.
He battled for Serenity,
Lost his innocence tryin' to keep the 'verse free...
Rebel captain, fightin' rebel captain.
Rebel captain, fightin' rebel captain.
Rebel captain, fightin' rebel captain.
Fightin' rebel captain in a Firefly!
(I was dared to do this. Yes, it's a cross between 'Pretty Little Dead Girl' and 'Mal's Song. I am so sorry.)
