The first Christmas -- spent scared and sleepless in a warehouse -- had still been a gift, in its way; neither expected it, or expected it to last.
But it did last. It lasted, and kept lasting, through two decades of Christmases. Through danger and delight, and an accident who had her father's eyes, if not his tail, until it reached an accident it couldn't last through.
Edward brought the news on Christmas Eve; Sam listened without flinching, closed the door, put the presents under the tree.
The first Christmas had been a gift.
