To the people who stood there and laughed as my smoothie carrier collapsed and my lunch got splattered across Mission Street, leaving me sobbing helplessly:
Yes, you're quite right, seeing a hungry woman lose her entire lunch is hilarious. It's even funnier if you have any sense of time and are thus aware that the woman in question, who was clearly hurrying back to someplace (probably her office) was at the end of her lunch hour. You're seeing a member of the overfed bourgeois go unfed! Probably for the first time in her money-grubbing life! How gut-bustingly funny!
I must say, continuing to laugh without assisting during the 'scrambling to save the second smoothie before it joined the first one on the ground' was definitely what pushed this little incident over the edge from 'merely amusing' into 'high comedy'. I mean, what does one woman need with two smoothies, anyway? She's not going to go hungry, because that couldn't possibly be someone else's lunch she's trying to save, right? Right. So helping her save it from the clutches of gravity would just be thwarting the narrative flow of this obviously much-deserved moral lesson, which was, I suppose, 'don't buy Jamba Juice unless you're taking a cab back to work'.
Oh, and as a note to whomever stole the ten dollars out of my back pocket during all this comedy (I felt your hand, motherfucker):
I really hope you needed that more than I did. And if not, I really hope you slip in the melting pool of what was my lunch and fall on your ass in the street.
I hate the world.
