Sleeping on couches really depends a lot on the couches in question. Her couch was long enough and deep enough that it makes more sense. Think something closer to a long twin sized bed with back and arm rests. It was probably a little narrower, but not all that much.
Indeed! I tend to switch out beds every six years or so. But then I'm used to futons that get work rather quickly, probably due to the lack of a box spring.
I used to buy really hard super hard hard hard firm beds, because I'd always been told they were good for your back. Then when I was bed shopping for a new one, my brother (who is a chiropractor) told me I should get something that has good support, but also has a lot of cushioning. And he was so right. I haven't had nearly the problems since the new bed (which is one of the high end Sealy's with that laytex foam).
My first [traditional cotton batting style] futon mattress was absolutely wonderful, lasted me well over 10 years. It was the best possible combination of resilient and conforming; my arm never went to sleep, etc.
My second [one of those modern foam core] broke down within a year. As in "huge hollows where people lie in the bed" kind of broken. :(
I'm impressed that you had survived fourteen years as well as you have!
...
Is your new bedthing really comfy? What was it like finally being able to spread out? ^_^
