The last time my Grandma and I went to NYC together, we went and saw
Next to Normal on Broadway. It was phenomenal. I cried while watching it, it made me think of what it was like as a child living with Diana (my mother). The mother in the musical is named Diana as well, so it was an interesting experience!
This is my favorite number from the musical, it was one that I can really relate to and some of the lyrics just crack me up.
Zoloft and Paxil and Buspar and Xanax
Depakote, Klonopin, Ambien, Prozac
Atavan calms me when I see the bills
These are a few of my favorite pills
Now I can't speak about medications used to treat other mental health disorders but I can speak about antidepressants. I suffer from chronic major depression and have been on and off medication since I was 18. According to the latest information, 38% of patients do not respond to antidepressants and 6 out of ten adults experience at least one side effect. And it takes about 30 days of medication before you even begin to know whether the medication is working or not. Despite all of the medical advances that have been made, electroshock therapy remains the most effective treatment for chronic depression.
It can be an extremely frustrating process and in fact I have stopped taking medication several times because my depression worsened or because the side effects were so awful. And this song does an amazing job of describing that frustrating process of trying to find a treatment that you respond to.
