A/N: First time I've ever written het or Chad/Sophia.

They never did officially break up, just more of a stop of all communication. Some would say it was Sophia’s fault for pushing, demanding too much, too soon. Others would blame Chad saying his resistance and his screaming match finally ended it all. There was one person though, who didn’t take sides because he knew Chad’s past, knew of the heart ache and loss he experienced and knew why Chad could never truly open up and tell the truth. Chad was just getting in before Sophia did; he had been hurt too many times not be careful anymore.

But none of that explained why Sophia and not Jared was sitting be Chad’s still body at South Crest Hospital.

***

Sophia was watching some television, just relaxing trying to forget how her heart was broken. She was cuddled up on the lounge with a blanket watching the daytime soaps. Some crappy television, double choc-chip chocolate ice-cream, tissues and crappy TV was her way of forgetting, trying to move on.

The last thing she was expecting was phone call from South Crest Hospital.

“Hello this is Julie a doctor from South Crest Hospital. Do you know a Mr. Chad Michael Murray?” the voice said on the other end of the line.
Sophia answered immediately, “Yes I’m his girlfriend”. She didn’t know why she said she was his girlfriend, didn’t even know if Chad would want to see her let alone care that she called Chad her boyfriend. It just felt like the right thing to do.

“He’s been in an accident-” The doctor continued.

“I’m on my way” Sophia cut in.

“Ok just say your there for Chad Michael Murray at reception.”

“Ok” and with that Sophia hung up.

Her hands were shaking and her mind was going a million miles an hour. She didn’t even think to ask what happened or how he was. She quickly grabbed her keys, hand bag and with her phone still in hand she locked and pulled the door closed behind her.

Normally when ever Sophia ventured into the world she liked at least fifteen minutes notice. That’s about how long it would take to find a suitable outfit and re-do her make up. That was always how she was and because of it people often got the wrong impression of her. People would take one look at her and think Bimbo with a capital B. What they didn’t know was that she was smart, like really smart. She was a perfectionist, who planned things down to the finest detail; she researched and made sure she knew what she was talking about before she spoke. With her being so gorgeous she had everything to prove to everyone who had doubted her.  But with everything that happened with Chad she just didn’t care anymore. She loved him honest to god loved him and wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. She was dressed in baggy sweats and a shirt three years out of date. She stopped wearing make up and only left the apartment when it was necessary. She hated how the man who had broken her still had so much control over her life. And that’s the only reason she can explain for why she’s heading to the hospital, rushing and weaving through traffic trying to get there as fast as she can.

***

When Sophia walked through the emergency doors she was immediately taken back with smells and the sounds.  All she could smell was the disinfectant, clean smell.  To the left of her she noticed a crying girl at the vending machine trying to get her chocolate out. There was a woman walking towards her, obviously her mother, she looked tired and exhausted.

Sophia just stood there taking in her surroundings. She could overhear everyone’s attempts at hushed whispers. “Here’s some more money Sarah” the mother at the vending machine said to her daughter.
When Sophia looked back, the daughter and mother were both smiling and heading back to their seats.  There weren’t many people in the waiting area but there was enough to make her feel sick.

She quickly made her way to the reception desk.

“Hi, can I help you?” the nurse said looking up

“Hi I was told that Chad Michael Murray was in an accident. I’m Sophia bush his girlfriend” she said in a rush.

“Ok I’ll just page his doctor and let her know you’re here. Please take a seat she shouldn’t be long.”
“Ok thank you” Sophia said before turning and walking over to the seats.

It only took ten minutes for her name to be called and Sophia immediately jumped up to meet to doctor.

“I’m Sophia, Chad’s girlfriend.”

“Hi I’m Doctor Julie, we spoke on the phone.”

Doctor Julie wasn’t anything like Sophia imagined. She was in about her late 50’s with short curly grey hair. She was short but only just and she had a really pretty smile that made her wrinkles deepen.

“What happened?’

“There was a car accident; he was hit by a drunk driver. He has a broken leg, a few cracked ribs and sustained a server concussion along with a few cuts and bruises.” The doctor informed her.

“Will he be okay?”

“He was extremely lucky but I expect him to make a full recovery, probably be able to go home tomorrow evening if not Wednesday morning at the latest.”

“Can I see him?” Sophia asked eagerly.

“Yes sure dear just follow me.”

“Thank you.”

The walked down the bright white corridors silently. Sophia was just letting it all sink in. She probably should call his parents or Jared let them know what’s happened. Then Sophia had a thought.

“Excuse me Doctor but why did you call me and not Chad’s parents?”

“Chad didn’t seem to have his wallet with him; the only possession we could locate that would identify him was his cell phone. We checked his call history and your number was last number he called. Well last few actually but well that’s understandable with your relationship” the doctor said with a little chuckle.

“Yeah that makes sense” Sophia answered distantly. But it didn’t make sense; they stopped talking two weeks ago after their big fight. He hadn’t called her and she hadn’t called him. It just didn’t add up. Surely Chad would have called someone in the last two weeks so there should be other numbers then hers.

She was drawn out of her thoughts when the doctor spoke. “Here’s Chad room.”

Sophia looked in to find it empty. ‘Chad’s not there.”

“He down getting his leg casted he should be back soon if you would like to wait in there.”

"Ok thank you Julie, I appreciate all the help.”

“That’s fine.” The doctor walked off and Sophia went in and took a seat next to where Chad’s bed would be placed if it was in there.

***

Sophia woke with a gentle nudge to the shoulder. She looked up to find Doctor Julie smiling down at her.

“Sweetie, Chad’s on his way back, but we gave him some morphine for the pain so he’s asleep right now okay.”

“But what about his concussion?’ Sophia asked concerned.

“We checked his OB’s first and he’ll be fine.”

“Ok, well you guys know what you’re talking about” Sophia said attempting to smile.

Just then Chad’s bed was wheeled into the room. Sophia took a step back, allowing the nurses to set Chad up comfortably. Once they left Sophia dragged her chair to Chad’s side and held his hand and whispered prayers into the air.

***

Sophia woke up to the sound of soft grunting and groaning. She immediately looked up to see Chad’s eyes piercing into her skin.

She let a tear run down her cheek, silently thanking who ever let Chad wake up and be ok.

“What you doing here?” Chad mumbled pulling his hand from her hers.

“They called me, said you were in accident. I had to come and make sure your ok; you know see the damage for myself.”

“Well I’m fine now so you can leave, thanks for stopping by.” Chad said closing his eyes against the pain.

“I’m not going anywhere, not to you feel up to talking because we have some stuff to sort through before I can walk away from you.” Sophia said sternly.

***

Chad opened his eyes and saw the look of hurt on her face. He never wanted to hurt her but he had to protect himself. He always lived by the saying ‘Survival Of The Fittest’ and he knew he wouldn’t be able to survive when Sophia broke his heart.

“There’s nothing to talk about Soph” Chad said dismissively.

“There is and you know it. I just want to know why? Why did you say all those things to me when we were fighting?  Why won’t you open up and let me in? I still love you, how silly is that? I wanted to marry you and have 50 little Chad and Sophia’s running around. I wanted to grow old and wrinkly with you and when we died I wanted us to be buried together” Sophia said in between sobs. “I love you but you still won’t trust me and that hurts more then everything.”

Chad hated the pain that he caused Sophia; it was just what that woman did to him. It made him just as bad as her in the end.  “I can’t” Chad gasped.

Sophia stood up, “You can but you won’t”. Her face was angry but she still had that hurt look in her eyes. “You think you can’t but I know you can.”

Chad let a tear run down his cheek. I hurt him too keeping this a secret, hell it wasn’t even some huge dramatic secret but it still hurt just the same.

“Chad please” Sophia begged."I know theres something you want to tell me, I know you've been ringing my cell and then hangin up, how else do you think I knew about the accident. They called your last dialled number and it was me."

He knew he had to, telling her would make it stop and it wouldn’t matter anyway because he had already lost her. Never mind the fact that Jared said he’d tell Sophia unless Chad did.

“I loved her.” Chad began.

“I loved her with everything I had; I gave her my everything, my heart, my soul. But in the end none of that mattered. She still left me with nothing but memories and a broken heart. I went home early from work one day and I wanted to surprise her, that’s how I found out she was having an affair. It was the whole time we were together maybe even before that.  I just walked out the apartment. I went back when I knew she would be at work, got all my stuff and left. As I unpacked a box I found a note in it, It was from her saying ‘it was fun while it lasted’. She just didn’t get how much I loved her, how much I would give up for her and she through it away like it was nothing, like I was nothing.”

“Oh Chad, I’m so sorry but you know I’m nothing like her you know. I would never do that too you.”

“I wasn’t sure. I was so confused and I wanted to trust you but there was just a little bit of fear and doubt eating me away. I realized that I loved you and I just couldn’t take the risk” Chad said looking away.

“Chad I promise you ok I love you and I’m here forever. If... if you’ll take me back, take us back. I’ll do anything you want, we can go slow and take our time till your comfortable enough to trust me with your heart.”

“I don’t know how to do this, it’s been a while. What if I do it wrong and you hate me.”

“I can’t hate you Chad, I love you. Even if you fuck up, I’ll know why and I’ll help you get past it. In case you didn’t realize it  but I might not have your heart or soul but you have mine. I gave it to you a while ago so just you be careful about breaking it.” Sophia said smiling warmly.

“Even if I do something wrong you won’t hate me?’

“Never Chad, never” Sophia said squeezing his hand.

“I’m sorry” Chad whispered.

Sophia kissed his forehead. “You told me and that’s what matters.”

Chad drew in a shaky breath. “I love you.”

Sophia beamed, “I love you too, forever.
