The microprinter, a Citizen CBM 1000, turns out to be both fast and quiet. I suppose that's what users want from a point-of-sale printer! The roll of 57mm paper that I found in the junk-box seems to be OK, although it must be 20 years old at least and has blue ink designed for HP printing calculators.
Getting it to print was straightforward once I had the proper combination of 9-to-25-pin adaptors and null modem cables. A few control codes later, and I had the usual "Hello, world" scaled up to be easily readable.
