Made a trip to Book Alcove today and picked up only a few of the books I wanted. Very few John Carter available (I got the 10th book in the series) and not much Harry Harrison. At least, not many first books of scifi series like I'd wanted. I actually think the library has the first in The Stainless Steel Rat series, just not many others. I'll try to get a copy and see if I like the series. Oh, also not very many Honor Harrington. Like, the last one. Looks like I'll be buying a lot from the amazon.com marketplace.
The most important book I needed was Assassin's Quest by Robin Hobb. I finished Royal Assassin some time this evening and picked up AQ almost immediately afterwards. What is it with these books, that I can't race through them like Harry Potter? I know they're not children's books, but I'm perfectly capable of finishing two David Eddings' in a 12-hour time period if I put my mind to it. There's a reason I went through two copies of King of the Murgos and Demon Lord of Karanda. I'll admit that I was somewhat daunted by the 757-page length of AQ when I first fanned through it. The print is also very dense.
But, seriously, 140 pages into it and I'm simply irritated. I am 99.9% against spoilers but I admit to glancing through at chapter titles during one of my slow periods of this book. I think I've been reading about 3 hours (give or take a few minutes of cuddling with Trinity, grabbing a bite to eat, or checking on my provinces) and I'm only this far?
I suspect the beginning will be his battle with Regal and then the last parts will be him getting with Verity and helping the Elderlings against the Raiders. I kind of wish there wasn't a dragon on the front cover because now I think the Elderlings are dragons. These opening chapters almost make me yearn for the second Song of Ice and Fire book.
I got the first and third books of Hobb's Ship series and I have to admit I'm less-enthused about diving in than I was in the midst of RA. They were hardback copies and I almost didn't buy them, thinking they'd be about $10 each since the price tends to be half the marked. When I looked for the price, though, I saw $4.00 and $6.50 pencilled into the cover and knew it was almost cheaper for me to get them than even paperback copies at a regular store. Or ordering them off the marketplace, with s/h.
