Halebid

Mar 21, 2006 22:12

This is from a Hindu temple we went to called Halebid in Karnataka South India. Its a small carving on the outside. Behind the chariot is a labyrinth.

This is a closer shot. Yes its a labyrinth all right! Very unusual and mysterious. Well the Greeks did reach South India way back when. Its the only one I've ever seen in India.

No one at the temple could explain. All they could tell me was, "Yes, that's a labyrinth." as if I was asking a silly question as to why?

edit

found out that this carving is related to a Mahabharat story and represents something called a chakra vyuha. and this article that relates it to labyrinths.

it even shows the same carving at Halebid.
I learn new things every day!!!
