Marisa and I have seen a few of the California Missions.
1. San Gabriel (we fit that in during an L.A. visit).
2. San Francisco (this was during a S.F. visit on my sabbatical).
3. San Jose (in Fremont, California--during a little visit to East Bay and SF the year after my sabbatical).
4. San Rafael (in the same vacation with San Jose).
We would like to see more.
Currently of interest is San Carlos Borromeo of Carmel River, otherwise known as Mission Carmel. This is south of San Jose. We could visit six missions.
So if we flew into San Jose we could rent a car and go to:
5. Santa Clara (this might be difficult--the school there is not into tourists).
6. Highway 35 to Santa Cruz (stay there, end of day 1)
7a. West on Highway 1 to the Royal Presidio Chapel in Monterey.
7b. Mission Carmel in Carmel (end of day 2)
8. Through Salinas to 101 and on to Soledad for Nuestra_Senora_de_la_Soledad (end of day 3)
9. Fort Liggett and Jolon West of 101 at San Lucas to visit San Antonio de Padua (end of day 4)...very isolated.
10. North on 101 to San Juan Batista
...and return (end of day 5).
This would put us at about half of the missions. San Francisco Solano is the northern most which we missed in our last trip. We will have to plan that into a Santa Rosa trip.
