The back gutter, phase 1 is now complete.
Marisa accompanied me to Home Depot where I got a new 10 foot section of gutter, a new coupler, a tube of glue and an endcap. Also bought a 10 foot downspout for phase 2. (endcap 1.97, glue 3.78, gutter 6.98, coupler (slip-joint) 2.59, downspout 13.64).
I pulled down the end section after getting a rough location for cutting, used my tin snips to cut it (helps to wear leather gloves when putting pressure on the snips handles) and then tried to slip the end into the coupler. Got it close enough that a rubber mallet finished the job.
A rubber mallet is invaluable when working on a gutter.
I was lucky that once a put the new 10 foot section on and malleted it into the coupler, the complete length was just right. Did a little adjusting and got the gutter locked in with both pieces, except at the end.
There I had to put the endcap on: beaded glue around the cap, loosely placed on the end and whacked it with the mallet. I placed the top brace for the bracket in the end also.
None of the top braces were pushed down and locked. I want to give time for the cap glue to cure and also want to wait for the downspout before proceeding.
With the downspout, the filter and two angle pieces, all I need are fittings and a rainbarrel.
I purchased the rainbarrel online. While it is possible to get next weekend, I am not counting on it. It has a diverter which feeds from the front. This is good news because when I install it the front will be perpendicular to the door and one of the sides will actually be mounted on the house, so I do want the diverter to exit from the front.
I have determined I won't need to mount downspout/diverter/filter to the siding: I can mount to the window molding.
Really, all I need now is a white adapter to a 3.5 inch outer diameter pipe and a rectangular downspout converter. I have a 3 inch white pipe I can saw off pieces to connect the adapters...and everything else is either downspout, filter or diverter...which already have!
Alas, my allergies kicked in to-day. Despite having taken Claritin, I was sneezing a storm. Nevertheless I hacked out most of this tree/bush which volunteered itself between our yard and House 70's yard. I asked Sterling if he could take care of his side and he quickly did. I did most of our side except for the very base which was beyond the abililty of my cropper.
Also dug up more "sorghum" weeds and dandelions.
Next weekend I will set up the base for the rain barrel and dig up the 3 foot wide path to the front, removing all weeds. Also I will buy the converter pieces and install those loosely...and buy more stones to step up the rain barrel.
I need to remove the sand covered stone square in front of the "old" dry well and dig back to the dry well. This gets it very close to what I need to set up the posts for the gate.
Also want to start digging into Marvin's Garden.
Meantime I am going to take the Claritin and try to build up this drug in my system so I am not as sensitive to these early spring pollens.
Now that there is more sunlight after work, I may get some of this work done when I first get home.
The following weekend is the last one before our trip so hope to get the rainbarrel setup that weekend and get close to finishing Marvin's Garden dig.
