No carpentry was done in the backroom project, after Wednesday completing the new higher floor joists. The structure, using the same 2x6's, was mounted on 6x6's that went on top of the sills, similar to how the 1908 house was constructed. What is different is that the 1908 house used 2x4 boxes on top of that: cripple walls to raise the height of the floor joists.
The carpenters did not come back yesterday: they were having problems with their trailer which they use to carry their compressors, nail guns and other tools.
They are expected back to-day.
While waiting I started reaching out to carpenters. Because I used Angi I got two companies--one which charges money for doing an estimate (and reviews said they charged too much at every turn) and another which has a website based in Texas. No to both.
Meanwhile this general contractor firm, Ybarra Construction, was clued in to the Angi request and called to set me up an estimator. This is merely a ploy to get me in on some other project which they will waste time and money to complete (based on their reviews) or use various tactics to aggressively market themselves (like tagging onto Angi to push their own flawed projects). The guy was reticent to mention Ybarra. If I had heard that at the very beginning I would have shut it down, because they have called before. To-day they will call to confirm the appointment and I will turn them down:
* Oregon CCB license expired last month.
* Not a local business: based in California.
* Not certified for work on pre-1968 homes with no lead training for their workers.
* Not a contractor for plumbing but a general contractor.
* Terrible terrible reviews locally. In the last two years, 12 scathing reviews, many with pictures.
One plumber I contacted out of the blue doesn't do plumbing during remodels. Not sure why, but ok. One contacted me, I responded, then nothing (Rose City Plumbers). Service Plumbers--not sure. Modern--have to wait for the estimator. Pipeline--most likely. There was one other plumber recommended to me by Neil Kelly. I will have to call them to-day.
Good news-- my estimates on expenses were overblown slightly...but enough to see that my budget as-is might work for the duration of the back room project. If not, I do have one more resource to tap. It's good to have options and not feel backed into a corner.
Received a Star Trek glass today. It is really nice and supports Star Trek Beyond.
Work progresses slowly. I fixed a problem in one utility. Made some progress in another utility using code provided by someone at another company.
Made a bowl now that I have frozen veggies. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was very dark.
