Oklahoma Bear Hunt Under way

Oct 02, 2009 15:15

Anxiety for the next thirty days for me.  Archery season opened in Oklahoma on Thursday on bears and runs until November 1st  Regular Arms will begin Oct 24 and the season ends Nov 1.  My dreams have been filled with apprehension and in those dreams I can smell death.  I keep thinking about the poorly managed hunt in New Jersey a couple years back where the population numbers had been vastly over stated.  In that instance NJ Governor, called an emergency stop to the hunt as many many more bears were killed than were anticipated.  I do think it interesting that H1N1 is in an outbreak with nearly all schools in the area that is being hunted have been hard hit by the virus.

In the case of Oklahoma, Senator Kenith Corn has stated to AP that there are well over 800 bears in Oklahoma.  This is not backed by fact in the least.  The Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, over several years of collecting data has numbered us bears at perhaps 400 bears in the area being hunted with less than 100 bears outside of the hunted areas.  That is directly from empirical evidence gathered by scientists.

That the Good Senator would mist-state the number and indeed introduce legislation calling for an emergency bear hunt, is ludicrous and this same individual wants to run for Lieutenant Governor in the next election.  He can't even get his facts straight.  He's a Democrat from Poteau, OK.

At least tomorrow I'll be in Tulsa and there is no hunting outside of the region where the bear hunt is being allowed, that is, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain and Pushmataha Counties of SE Oklahoma.
