Since her little "run-in" the day before, Aleida had been feeling especially brave. Whether it was her ability to control her powers (for the most part, that is), or the fact that she hadn't had an adverse encounter with another mutant she did not know, but whatever it was, she quite liked it. It had grown somewhat troublesome, hiding in her room and always getting told off by her roommate for isolating herself. She would be damned if she didn't have some snarky quip for her roommate now; she was in a student lounge for gosh sakes! Progress! This was progress!
Aleida sat alone on a couch - a seat which she had chosen hesitantly as it practically invited others to sit with her, but all the chairs had been taken - her chemistry open in her lap. Looking over the information she was already slightly familiar with, she heaved a sigh. She was so very disappointed with the Institutes choices of classes for the older students; she couldn't begin to imagine how dreadful the next year would be when she had to take algebra over, or geometry again.
Turning the pages in her book, she stumbled across the periodic table of elements. Oh, the games she could play with this. Looking around anxiously (everyone had always made fun of her memorization of the chart) she noticed everyone seemed caught up with their own business and it was safe to proceed. "Third element in the Halogen in group?" she asked herself quietly, suddenly locking her eyelids shut so she couldn't even be tempted to cheat. "Iodine," she answered after just a moment, finally looking to see if she was corrected. Oh joy! She was!
Taking a bite of the apple she had snatched from the cafeteria, Aleida's mind wandered for just a minute. Perhaps life here wouldn't be so bad. If she could sit and study for ages on end, go to her class, master her powers, and be away from Jordon all the same time, it seemed she could want nothing more. Turning back to her book, she continued to play this little game with herself, testing herself over and over again, and managing to get them all correct.
