feis and i are driving to pittsburgh from mountain view (from seattle for him). yesterday we drove down CA-1, which is completely gorgeous, to san luis obispo and from there down a few miserable not-lit windy one-lane highways to bakersfield.
in san luis obispo we stopped at the Buona Tavola restaurant, which was a good decision all around. i had scampi and proscuitto ravioli in saffron cream sauce, which left me with one of those rare "i just had a very good meal" glowy feelings afterward. as we were leaving, the guy at the front desk asked me about my shirt (jack and i were both wearing the helper shirt), and as i was explaining, one of the waitresses (who apparently majored in math at a nearby college) came up and exclaimed "oh, you shouldn't have asked him! i was going to figure it out for myself!" after i finished, the guy told me about how he and his friends used to have a club/gathering/something which went by the name "entropic cement", with the logo being gravel.
partway along one of the later highways jack had us stop to look at the stars. i hadn't been in a place with so little light pollution since the last time my dad took the family out stargazing when i was a kid.
today we had worse food and much easier driving. it's difficult to sit at the wheel for many hours without snacking frequently.
