when you dress something up, where is the line between "genuine enhancement" and "BS"?

example: i would be comfortable dressing up to look snazzy, but disapprove of going to job fairs / interviewers in a suit to try to impress the recruiter.

example: red velvet cake is made by taking cake and adding red food dye (also a bit of cocoa powder to make it dull-red not bright-the-fuck-red). i am undecided on this one but i think it's probably okay. on the other hand, pistachio companies used to soak their pistachios in red food dye to hide all the blemishes, to make them look more appealing to consumers.

i apparently have this mode where i get very disdainful of a thing that's pretending to be something it's not. i think the distinction lies in whether the dressing-up serves to dupe the intended audience, to hide a possibly uncomfortable truth (the pistachios are ugly; the job candidate is a moron).
