I have to say, as much as I hated volleyball and attempted to sit out (and I DID get hit in the head. I hate things flying at me for a reason XS), I never whinged about it as much as Mal does. I mean, I feel some sympathy for her, because gym and I are NOT friends (Softball man. Fuck softball), but she could try actually seeing what people like about it. Or if nothing else, just do it, since they'll be moving on to something else in gym at any time.

ETA: FERRETS! Ferrets in packing peanuts! EEEEEEEEEEEEEE~

Yeah, I mean I hated gym and volleyball too but I didn't spend everyday whining about it. It was just an annoying part of the day and it ended eventually. Mal acts like she has to play every hour of everyday. And I'm not certain but I think she doesn't even have gym everyday. So, what the Hell is she complaining about?! I had gym EVERYDAY.Shut up, Mal!

I think Mallory has a martyr's complex. As much as I want to like her for being into writing and reading...and did as a kid...she bugs the fuck out of me. >.<

She whines that 11 is a perfectly fine age to have contacts because she's oh, so mature--I wear glasses and I'm happy with my glasses. I wouldn't wear contacts even if you paid me because I'm that squeamish with my eyes. I would think contacts would be something a person could have if they were old enough and mature enough to take good care of them. I think some 11 year olds might be mature enough to take good care of them, some not so much. Just depends on the person imo. Did Mallory ever ask for contacts or is she moaning and bitching about something she just ~assumes~ will be turned down ( ... )

The only time I'm sure she asked for contacts was in the Trouble with Twins book. And her parents said she was too young. I don't even remember when I got my first contacts but I was older than her. Maybe 15?

And yeah, I think her parents should have allowed some make-up. Brown eyeliner or a foundation. And I definitely think they should have allowed her to straighten her hair. That's no biggie and not a huge permanent change.

Now that I think on it, Mal is pretty much the only one who never got called pretty. I even remember Kristy being called pretty. But Mal gets 'sturdy'. And yeah, Dawn got an upgrade from plain to looking like a model. WTF was up with that? It probably correlates with her becoming a stuck-up pain in the ass.

You are on POINT about that Kristy would act the same way if she had a bad athlete on her team. It was KRISTY who bullied a kid into a competition where he ended up breaking his leg because she wanted to win so bad. So, basically, both Mal and K-Ron can go straight to Hell.

I was 11 when I got my contacts, but I was very mature when it came to taking care of stuff. And my parents were tired of me breaking glasses on horseback. I really think the second one was the deciding factor. :P

At 11 I was allowed to wear light colored lipstick, blush, pick out my hair cut, clothing, jewelry, etc. If my Mom thought I crossed the line, she said "no", but otherwise I was allowed to find my own style.

And yeah, I definitely think the way they fetishize Claudia and Stacey and Dawn and Jessi would be hard on the other members. I never remember them saying Mary Anne is pretty either, but she has a boyfriend, so that's all that counts, right? *gag* (I love guys, I enjoy dating and I want to get married in the near future, but shit, if you look to men for your only valdiation, you might as well change your name to Anastasia Steele and plan on being controlled your whole life.)

I personally think Mal IS mature enough to take care of contacts. I mean, she's a second mom to her siblings, right? So, I don't really get the Pikes saying no, she can't have them. Unless they think her Hell beast siblings will end up wrecking them.

When I was 11 I didn't have any interest in make-up but I was also allowed to have a say in my clothes, hair and jewelry. And some Pike parent rules seem a little weird. Like no sparkly sweaters? Why not? She didn't ask for a crop top that says 'Slut' on it.

And yeah, I don't remember a time that MA was called pretty. It was always about Logan. I think after both her make-overs they did say she looked good, but not pretty.

I never read this one, but Mal's reactions sound like mine. I really, really hated PE at school, and that was increased tenfold if we ever had to have a class with the boys!

I feel for Mal because I was the same but what this book boils down to is 100+ pages of someone whining. And that's why I hate her in this book. She never lets up!

I really have to sympathize with Mal in this book. I hated gym too, and it didn't help that my gym classes were always with boys. I didn't even realize non-co-ed gym was a thing. I still made A's in gym, because, as they told us at the start of every semester, it was an easy A--just wear your uniform and participate. They didn't judge us on our personal abilities, or I'm sure I would have failed. I would much rather listen to ghost stories then have gym!

As for how she handled everything, I give her a pass because she's only eleven and the "adults" (I use the term loosely) in her life rarely listen to her problems or give her truly useful advice.

All that said, great snark as, usual!

I wish I'd gone to your school! At mine, they related your performance to how much you were trying. Which isn't fair. You can try your brains out and still fail spectacularly.

My parents only got one "she's not applying herself" talk from my teachers...and that was sixth grade gym. So I get Mallory in this book, I just think she takes it way too far.

I used to have the 19-inch Mallory doll. Wish I'd kept her. She was really pretty. Ann may have hated Mal, but at least Kenner didn't!

And now that has me picturing Ann looking over the dolls and going, "Good...good...sophisticated...black...OH MY GOD, WHAT IS THIS???!!! WHY DOES MALLORY PIKE LOOK SO PRETTY? DON'T YOU IDIOTS KNOW SHE HAS RED HAIR? A REDHEAD CANNOT BE PRETTY! AND I HATE MAL, SO SHE CAN'T POSSIBLY BE PRETTY! FIX THIS NOW!!!!!! At which point the Kenner execs said it was too late, the dolls were already on the market. Then they cautiously added that maybe she should seek professional help to deal with her seething hatred for one of her own characters. Ann stalked out of the building and went to go watch I Love Lucy to calm down.

And *scene*.

I'm so mad that I NEVER saw any of the BSC dolls in stores. I would have def bought me a MA and maybe a Claudia. I looked up the Mal doll and she is very cute! I mod dolls so I'm always looking for dolls with a good face mold. Like I want a Merida doll because her face mold is so cute!
