Pi (and Hot Dogs)

Mar 11, 2014 12:36

Apparently Friday is Pi Day*.  No, not apple pi, or steak and ale pi, or even cheese and onion pi, nor yet The Life of Pi, but Pi - the relationship between the circumference and the diameter or radius of a circle.  Pi, the recurring number generally referred to as 3.142 - though it has been calculated to million decimal places, and is still being calculated!  I realise this only really works for the way Americans write the date, 3.14 see rather than 14.3 but . . .  Though I suppose for English dates the whole of March could be Pi month - 3.'14?

Anyhew, should you, Dear Reader, wish to calculate the value of Pi without all the number crunching you could always use frozen hot dogs.  You will also need some narrow adhesive tape, though I suppose you could use a washable marker pen, and a hard-surfaced floor clear for about 6-10 feet in front of you.  Then This Is What You Do.

Bearing in mind that the thing thrown is suggested to be long, thin (thinner the better) and uniform, you could always use pencils, or dowel rods.  They might be less messy.  I mean, who's going to want to eat the hot dogs after they've been thrown so many times onto an even clean floor?  And you'll have to clean the floor afterwards!  So there you are, Dear Reader.  Happy Experimenting, Happy Calculations!

Y'all have a good day now!

*Consider this due warning to lay in supplies of hot dogs/pencils and clear floor areas!
